Chapter 9 - THE RECKONING IN THE DUSTThe damp, earthy smell of the underground drainage tunnel clung to Emma’s clothes as she stumbled through the pitch-black concrete corridor, guided only by the beam of Mateo’s tactical flashlight.

Above them, muffled thuds and bursts of automatic gunfire reverberated through the earth like distant thunder. Adrian was up there, fighting his own men turned traitors and federal task force units, putting his life on the line.

“Keep moving, Emma!” Mateo urged, shoving his weapon forward as they rounded a massive concrete junction. “We’re fifty yards from the exit ladder!”

They burst out of the concrete drainage pipe into the cool, star-lit desert night. A sleek black SUV was parked hidden beneath a camouflage tarp near the wash embankment.

Mateo threw open the passenger door, pushing Emma toward the seat. “Get in. Lock the doors. If I’m not back in ten minutes—”

Bang!

A single, suppressed gunshot cracked through the night air.

Mateo jerked violently, a dark crimson flower blossoming across his chest, before collapsing sideways into the desert sand.

Emma screamed, throwing herself out of the SUV and scrambling toward Mateo’s fallen body. “Mateo! Mateo, talk to me!”

Heavy footsteps crunched against the gravel behind her.

Emma spun around. Emerging from the shadows of the drainage exit was a man with cold, calculating eyes holding a silenced pistol. Behind him stood Detective Sarah Vance, her service weapon drawn and shaking slightly as she stared down at the scene.

“It’s over, Nurse Hart,” Victor Vance said smoothly, a sickening grin spreading across his face. He stepped over Mateo’s body without a second glance. “You played a very dangerous game helping Vale. But the game is finished.”

Sarah Vance lowered her gun slightly, staring at her brother with horror. “Victor... what are you doing? The orders were to arrest Vale, not execute his crew in cold blood!”

“The orders were to secure my future, Sarah,” Victor snapped, leveling his pistol directly at Emma’s chest. “And this little nurse knows everything about the setup. She saw me meet with the hospital administrator who turned off the security cameras that night.”

Emma’s breath hitched. She looked from Victor to Sarah. The pieces of the puzzle clicked into place with horrifying clarity.

“You’re the leak,” Emma whispered. “You’re the one who set up the hit on Vale.”

“And you’re the loose end,” Victor replied, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Before the hammer could fall, a heavy, deafening roar tore through the desert air from the darkness above the ravine ridge.

Twin high-beam headlights suddenly flooded the desert wash in blinding white light.

A black armored sedan tore over the ridge, barreling down the loose gravel slope at suicidal speed, crashing directly toward them.
