Chapter 4 - The Adopted Heir’s AwakeningThe media circus outside the St. Jude Cathedral was instantaneous and ferocious. Within twenty minutes of the wedding’s chaotic halt, vans from global news networks and gossip blogs clogged the cobblestone streets, their satellite dishes pointing aggressively toward the sky.

Inside the cathedral’s private vestry, the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Eleanor sat slumped in a high-backed velvet armchair, looking ten years older than she had that morning. Her hair was slightly disheveled, her makeup ruined. Clara sat on the opposite side of the mahogany table, refusing every offer of water or comfort from the church staff. Julian stood by the tall arched window, staring out at the flashing lights of the paparazzi, his hands clenched so tightly into fists that his knuckles were stark white.

"Explain it," Julian said quietly, not turning around. His voice was devoid of emotion, cold and hollow. "From the beginning. Every single detail. No lies. No omissions."

Eleanor looked up, her red-rimmed eyes pleading for a shred of mercy from the son she had raised.

"After... after Catherine was taken," Eleanor began, her voice hoarse, "the police found nothing. The psychological evaluation team told me I was slipping into terminal depression. They recommended an adoption agency to... to give me a purpose. To anchor me."

She swallowed hard, looking toward Julian.

"We went to the Hopewell Private Agency in Zurich. They specialized in confidential, high-end placements. They presented you to us, Julian. They told us your biological parents were diplomats who had died in a tragic accident abroad, leaving you an orphan with no living relatives."

Julian slowly turned around, his eyes narrowing. "Are you telling me that agency was a front?"

"I don't know!" Eleanor cried softly. "At the time, everything was legal, sealed by court orders and top-tier attorneys. You were my salvation, Julian. You became the heir to Sterling Global. You carried our name with honor. I loved you as my own... I still do."

"Don't," Julian snapped, stepping away from the window. The word hit Eleanor like a physical slap. "Don't say you love me while you're looking at me like I'm a stolen bicycle you parked in your garage while you searched for your real toy."

"Julian, that's not true—"

"Isn't it?" Julian laughed bitterly, a harsh, humorless sound. "For my entire life, nothing I ever did was quite good enough. I got a master's at Wharton? 'Good, but your grandfather founded Sterling Global at your age.' I closed a billion-dollar merger? 'Expected.' I fell in love with a woman from a normal background? 'Unacceptable, she doesn't carry the Sterling bloodline.'"

Julian pointed a shaking finger at Clara, who sat watching the exchange with wide, stunned eyes.

"And all this time," Julian continued, his voice rising in pitch and fury, "the woman you actually wanted—the daughter whose absence you punished me for not being—was right under your nose. You didn't hate Clara because she wasn't rich. You hated her because, on some subconscious, primal level, your soul recognized what your brain refused to see! You hated the girl your son chose because she held the key to the family you actually lost!"

Eleanor shrank back into the chair, unable to deny the terrifying accuracy of his words.

Clara slowly stood up, walking over to Julian. She reached out and gently touched his arm. The anger in his posture softened slightly at her touch, though his jaw remained locked.

"Julian," Clara whispered, her voice surprisingly steady despite the emotional hurricane swirling around them. "None of this is your fault. You didn't ask to be adopted. You didn't ask to be placed in this family."

"It's not just about the adoption, Clara," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper as he looked down at her. "Don't you see what this means?"

Clara frowned. "What do you mean?"

Julian turned back to Eleanor, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying realization.

"If Hopewell Agency lied about my identity... if they fabricated my past to place me in the Sterling household just months after Catherine was stolen..." Julian’s voice trembled. "Then my adoption wasn't an accident. It was a trade. Or worse... it was an inside job."
