Chapter 8 - Blood and LegacyThe revelation hit the boardroom like a concussion grenade.

Julian staggered backward, his hand slipping off the back of Clara’s chair. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. All his life, he had believed he was an outsider saved by the Sterling family, forced to earn his worth through perfection. Then he learned he was a replacement for a stolen daughter.

And now, the final, most agonizing twist: he wasn't just a replacement. He was the enemy’s blood, raised as a golden prisoner in the very fortress he was meant to destroy.

"That's... that's a lie," Julian whispered, shaking his head. "You're making it up to save yourself."

"Am I?" Richard chuckled darkly, reaching into his inner jacket pocket and pulling out a yellowed, manila folder stamped with confidential seals from a Swiss notary. He tossed it across the table. It landed right at Julian’s feet.

Julian stared down at the folder. He didn't want to pick it up. He wanted the floor to open up and swallow him whole.

Clara looked at Julian, her heart aching. Without hesitation, she bent down, picked up the folder, and opened it. Her eyes scanned the documents inside—birth certificates, DNA matching profiles, legal correspondence between the Hopewell Agency and the Vane Corporation.

"It's true," Clara whispered, looking up at Julian with deep, agonizing empathy. "Julian... your grandfather was Arthur Vane."

The name echoed through the boardroom. Arthur Vane—the ruthless billionaire who had waged a brutal corporate war against Richard Sterling thirty years ago, nearly destroying both empires before mysteriously disappearing from public life.

Eleanor placed a trembling hand over her mouth, staring at Julian in absolute disbelief. "No... no, Julian, I raised you. You are my son. Blood doesn't mean anything compared to twenty-four years of loving you."

"Does it?" Julian’s voice broke, raw and jagged. He looked at Eleanor, then at Richard, and finally down at the papers in Clara’s hands. "For you, Eleanor, I was always just a stand-in for Catherine. And for you, Richard, I was a trophy of war—a hostage raised in a golden cage."

Julian unbuttoned his suit jacket, slid it off his shoulders, and dropped it onto the floor beside the scattered papers.

"I'm done," Julian said quietly.

"Julian, wait—" Clara reached out, grabbing his wrist.

"No, Clara," Julian said, looking into her eyes with a heartbreaking tenderness. "This isn't my family. It never was. I'm a Vane by blood, a Sterling by fraud, and a stranger to both."

Before anyone could stop him, Julian turned around and walked out of the boardroom, the heavy glass doors sliding shut behind him with a soft, final click.

Richard watched him go with a cold, triumphant smirk. "There goes your golden boy, Eleanor. Looks like you lost both children in one day."

Eleanor didn't cry. The tears were gone, replaced by an ancient, indestructible resolve. She turned her icy gaze away from Richard and locked onto him with the fury of a wounded lioness.

"You think you've won, Richard?" Eleanor said softly, stepping closer to him. "You think by dividing us, you win the empire?"

She turned to Clara, offering her hand across the mahogany table.

"Clara," Eleanor said, her voice steady and commanding. "Let's show your father how a real Sterling runs this company."
