Chapter 19 - The Duca LegacyBy December, the first true snowstorm of the year blanketed Manhattan in a thick, pristine blanket of white.

The penthouse looked like a winter palace. Massive glass windows framed the swirling snowflakes outside, while inside, the bio-fuel fireplace crackled with warm, amber light. A towering Christmas pine tree stood in the corner of the grand foyer, decorated with delicate crystal ornaments and custom silver ribbons.

Mia was now ten months old, cruising along the edge of the custom sofas with unstoppable enthusiasm, chasing after a mechanical toy puppy that Alessandro had bought her.

I was sitting at the grand oak dining table, reviewing the final year-end philanthropic reports for the newly established Vance-Duca Foundation. The numbers were staggering—over ten million dollars allocated toward maternal healthcare, childcare subsidies, and safe housing for struggling working mothers across New York City.

Footsteps approached softly across the hardwood floor.

Alessandro walked in, wearing a dark cashmere sweater, holding two crystal glasses filled with sparkling cider. He set one down in front of me and sat in the chair beside mine.

“You’ve been staring at those spreadsheets for two hours,” Alessandro observed with a faint, amused smile.

“I’m just reviewing the grants for the new childcare center in Brooklyn,” I said, looking up from the tablet. “It’s hard to believe that six months ago, I couldn't afford eight hundred and forty dollars for daycare, and now... look at this.”

Alessandro reached across the table, covering my hand with his warm fingers.

“You didn't survive because of luck, Claire,” Alessandro said quietly. “You survived because you refused to break. Every single mother who gets help from that foundation is there because of what you endured in that laundry room.”

I smiled, feeling a familiar warmth spread through my chest. “And to think, it all started because a baby wanted to pull on your silk tie.”

“The best investment I ever made,” Alessandro replied without a second of hesitation.

Before I could answer, the apartment's private elevator chimed softly.

We both turned our heads. The heavy steel doors slid open, revealing Sarah holding a large, beautifully wrapped holiday package adorned with a massive red silk bow.

“Excuse the interruption, Mr. Duca, Ms. Vance,” Sarah said politely with a warm smile. “This just arrived via international courier from Milan. It’s marked urgent.”

Alessandro stood up, walked over to accept the package, and set it right in the center of the dining table.

I used a small letter opener to slice through the heavy wrapping paper. Inside was a heavy leather-bound photo album and a handwritten note on thick cream-colored stationery.

I unfolded the note and read it aloud:

“To Claire, Alessandro, and little Mia. May your new beginning be filled with warmth, light, and unbreakable strength. Welcome home. — Lucia & Rosa.”

I opened the photo album. The very first page contained a polaroid picture taken months ago—a blurry, secret snapshot of me hiding behind the Egyptian cotton towels in the penthouse laundry room, holding a sleeping Mia against my chest while trying not to make a sound.

Beneath the polaroid, someone had handwritten a single, permanent caption:

The beginning of the empire.

I looked up from the photo, tears of pure joy glistening in my eyes.

Alessandro stood behind my chair, resting his hands gently on my shoulders as he looked down at the picture. He leaned down, pressing a warm, lingering kiss against my temple.

“They’re right,” Alessandro whispered softly against my skin, his arms sliding around me to hold both of us close as the snow fell silently over the glittering skyline outside. “This is just the beginning.”
