Chapter 9 - The UltimatumThe foyer felt as though it had been plunged into a deep freezer. The air was so thick with hostility that breathing felt like a deliberate chore.

Alessandro didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply stepped back into Victor’s personal space, his eyes narrowing into two slits of pure ice.

“You have exactly ten seconds to explain what kind of delusional game you’re playing before I have my men physically throw you and your thugs into the Hudson River,” Alessandro said, each word spaced out with lethal precision.

Victor didn't even blink. He looked at Alessandro with an infuriatingly calm amusement, then shifted his gaze back to me.

“Game, Duca? This isn't a game,” Victor said smoothly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a thick manila envelope, tossing it carelessly onto the glass foyer table. “This is a transition of power.”

I stared at the envelope. “What is that?”

“Proof of ownership,” Victor replied, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows and looking out over the glittering Manhattan skyline. “Five years ago, when your little boyfriend here and his precious family squeezed us out of the Midtown commercial district, they thought they won. But empires are built on leverage, Claire. And right now, I hold the ultimate leverage.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. “Talk straight, Vance.”

Victor turned around, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. “Three months ago, when Claire first applied for a job in this building under a false name, she didn't just stumble into your penthouse by accident. My corporate intelligence firm flagged your staffing gaps. We knew Elena was skimming funds. We knew your security protocols had blind spots.”

My blood ran cold. The room spun.

“No,” I whispered, staring at my father in absolute horror. “No, that’s not true! I didn't know! I swear I didn't know!”

“Of course you didn't know, my sweet, naive girl,” Victor said smoothly, though his eyes remained as cold as glass. “You were just desperate enough to walk right into the trap I set for you. I needed someone inside Duca’s inner circle. Someone who could access his private files, monitor his schedule, and lay the groundwork for our final acquisition.”

Alessandro’s head snapped toward me. His eyes—usually so sharp, so completely in control—flashed with a sudden, devastating betrayal.

“Is this true?” Alessandro asked quietly. His voice didn't rage. It was worse. It was entirely hollow.

“No!” I sobbed, tears streaming down my face as I stepped toward him, holding my hands out in desperate plea. “Alessandro, I swear to God, I had no idea! I’ve never worked for my father! I haven't spoken to him in six years! I didn't know anything about his corporate plans!”

Alessandro looked at me, searching my face for any sign of deception. For a terrifying, agonizing moment, I saw the walls closing in. I saw him believing the lie.

Before Alessandro could speak, Victor chuckled darkly.

“Save your breath, Claire. He’s a businessman. He knows how the game is played.” Victor turned his attention back to Alessandro. “Here are your choices, Duca. You sign over the Midtown commercial portfolio to Vance Enterprises by midnight tonight, or I leak the story to every tabloid in the country. Imagine the headlines: Billionaire Duca’s Secret Room: Secretive Tycoon Harbors Enemy’s Daughter and Illegitimate Child in Penthouse. Your stock will plummet twenty percent before the opening bell tomorrow.”

The silence that followed was deafening.

Victor stood tall, basking in his own perceived victory, fully convinced he had checkmated us both.

He didn't know Alessandro Duca. And he certainly didn't know what happened next.
