Chapter 6 - The Ghost from the PastThe silence in the holding room was absolute. Even the security guards seemed to hold their breath, sensing the massive tectonic shift happening beneath our feet.

Alessandro looked from Elena back to me, his gaze burning with an intensity that made it impossible to look away.

“Well?” Alessandro demanded softly, stepping closer to me. “Who are you, really?”

I closed my eyes, realizing that the lie—the secret I had protected for months—was finally being torn apart piece by piece. There was nowhere left to hide.

“My father is Victor Vance,” I whispered.

The effect of those four words was instantaneous.

Alessandro froze. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a statue carved from white marble. The name echoed off the sterile steel walls of the room, carrying with it a history of betrayal, corporate war, and blood.

Victor Vance. The man who had orchestrated the hostile takeover attempt of Duca Industries five years ago. The man whose betrayal had nearly destroyed Alessandro’s family company, resulting in a bitter, multi-million-dollar lawsuit and a lifetime banishment from the inner circles of New York high finance.

“Victor Vance,” Alessandro repeated, his voice dropping into a dangerous, chilling whisper. “The man who nearly ruined my father.”

“Yes,” I choked out, tears finally breaking free and rolling down my cheeks. “He’s my father. But we haven’t spoken in six years. When I got pregnant, when I told him I wouldn't marry the business associate he chose for me, he cut me off completely. He disowned me. He told me I was dead to him.”

Elena let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “Oh, please! Spare us the tragic soap opera! Do you really expect him to believe that a billionaire’s estranged daughter just happened to stumble into his penthouse as a maid by pure coincidence?”

“It was a coincidence!” I cried, turning to face her with desperate fury. “I needed a job that paid cash! I used my middle name on the application because Vance is toxic in this city! I didn't know whose penthouse this was until my first week on the job, and by then I was too terrified to leave because I had no money, no home, and a baby to feed!”

Alessandro stood motionless, processing the avalanche of information. His face was a mask of cold, unreadable calculation.

“Is that why Elena hated you?” Alessandro asked, his eyes shifting back to Elena. “Did you know who she was?”

Elena’s smile twisted into something ugly. “Of course I knew. It didn't take a genius to run a background check when she slipped up on her tax forms. I kept her around because I had leverage over her. I controlled her schedule, her pay, and her silence. But then you had to go play hero, Duca. You had to promote her and ruin everything.”

“You kept her trapped,” Alessandro said, his voice dangerously low.

“I kept her in her place,” Elena snapped. “Just like you should have.”

Alessandro didn't respond to Elena. Instead, he turned his full, piercing gaze back onto me. The air between us felt heavy, charged with an unbearable tension.

“You lied on your employment application,” Alessandro stated. It wasn't a question.

“Yes,” I whispered, trembling. “Fire me. Call the police. Do whatever you want. Just… please, let me take Mia.”

I braced myself for the explosion. I waited for him to scream, to order the guards to throw us out into the freezing rain, to finish what Elena had started.

Instead, Alessandro did something that defied every law of physics and logic.

He reached out, grabbed my trembling hand, and pulled me gently away from Elena.

“Pack your things,” Alessandro said quietly.

May you like

My heart stopped. “What?”

“Pack your things,” Alessandro repeated, his eyes locking onto mine with an unyielding, fierce determination. “You’re moving out of the lower-tier apartment tonight.”
