Chapter 3 - The Smoke and the ShadowThe emergency generators kicked in three seconds later, bathing the kitchen in a harsh, industrial amber glow.

Alarms wailed through the estate—a shrill, rhythmic shriek that made Bolt start barking furiously, his small body vibrating with panic.
"Stay under the island," Dominic commanded, his voice slicing through the chaos with absolute, chilling authority.
Before Emily could even blink, Dominic was moving. He pulled a heavy, matte-black Glock from a concealed holster beneath his arm, his movements fluid, lethal, and terrifyingly practiced. He motioned to Marta, who grabbed Bolt with one hand and shoved Emily toward the heavy steel pantry door in the corner of the kitchen.
"In. Now," Marta hissed, her face pale but completely steady.
"What about you—?" Emily started, but Antonio appeared out of nowhere, hauling Emily backward into the pantry as heavy gunfire erupted outside in the courtyard.
The sound of shattering glass and splintering mahogany echoed from the main foyer. Shouts, heavy boots, and the unmistakable rattle of automatic weapons turned the peaceful sanctuary of the Moretti estate into a war zone.
Inside the cramped pantry, surrounded by jars of imported olives and hanging hams, Emily clutched her knees to her chest. Bolt was trembling violently in Marta’s arms, whimpering softly.
"Is he... is Dominic going to be okay?" Emily asked, her voice cracking. She hated herself for caring. This man was a monster, a criminal, a myth parents used to scare children in Westbridge. But the image of his broad back stepping into the line of fire to protect them burned behind her eyelids.
"Dominic was raised in this war," Marta said quietly, her thumb stroking Bolt’s golden head. "The men who attacked us today aren't a rival family. They're ghosts from the federal task force trying to cut corners. They want him dead before he can expose the corruption inside their own department."
Emily’s blood ran cold. Corruption?
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the pantry was yanked open.
A man stood in the doorway. He wasn't one of Dominic's guards. He wore a tactical vest stamped with federal insignia, a black balaclava concealing his face, and a suppressed assault rifle pointed directly at Marta’s chest.
"Hand over the girl and the dog," the agent growled, his voice distorted by his mask. "Moretti's bleeding out in the hall. You're next if you don't cooperate."
Marta didn't flinch. She stepped in front of Emily, shielding the girl with her own body. "You'll have to go through me, Agent Miller."
Emily recognized the name. Agent Miller. The lead investigator from the local precinct who occasionally dropped by the veterinary clinic to ask questions about stray animals—questions that always felt a little too probing.
Miller raised his weapon higher. "Suit yourself, old woman."
Emily didn't think. Instinct, forged from years of working wild, cornered animals at the clinic, took over. She lunged forward, grabbing a heavy cast-iron skillet sitting on the bottom shelf of the pantry rack, and swung it with all her remaining strength straight into the back of Miller’s knee.
The agent shrieked, his leg buckling under the brutal impact. As he crashed down, the rifle slipped from his grip.
Before he could recover, a dark shadow materialized behind him.
A heavy, blood-streaked hand clamped down on the back of Miller's tactical vest. Dominic Moretti hoisted the grown man off the ground as if he weighed nothing, slamming his face straight into the marble doorframe with a sickening crack.
Miller went limp instantly, slumping to the floor in a heap.
Dominic stood over him, breathing heavily. Blood stained the left shoulder of his white shirt, dark and wet against the fabric. His dark eyes were wild, blazing with an ancient, terrifying fury.
He looked down at Emily, who was still clutching the heavy skillet, her knuckles white.
"Are you hurt?" Dominic demanded, his voice raspy.
"N-No," Emily stammered, her gaze dropping to the blood on his shoulder. "You're shot."
"It's a graze," Dominic dismissed the wound with a flick of his wrist. He looked past her to Marta and Bolt, who was now barking victoriously at the unconscious federal agent. "The perimeter is breached. We have five minutes before the backup units arrive."
"Where are we going?" Emily asked, her voice trembling.
May you like
Dominic reached out, his large, scarred hand gently wrapping around her wrist. His skin was burning hot, his grip firm and inescapable.
"Nowhere, Emily," he said, pulling her gently toward the secret exit behind the pantry shelves. "Because you just became an accessory to the most powerful syndicate leader in the country. There's no going back for you."
