Chapter 8 - Sanctuary in the StormThe speedboat cut through the choppy grey waters of Westbridge Bay like a blade, heading toward the rugged, pine-covered cliffs of the northern peninsula.

Emily sat on the cushioned bench in the stern, shivering slightly from the spray of salt water and the lingering adrenaline crash. Bolt was curled up in her lap, fast asleep once again, completely exhausted by his morning adventures as a mafia accomplice.
Dominic stood at the helm, his hands gripping the carbon-fiber wheel. The wind whipped his dark hair across his forehead, and the tension in his broad shoulders finally began to ease as the mainland receded into the fog.
He cut the engines, letting the boat glide smoothly into a hidden cove shielded by towering granite cliffs and dense evergreens. A sprawling, modern glass-and-stone safehouse was built directly into the cliffside, completely invisible from the water or the air.
As they tied up at the private floating dock, Dominic walked over and sat down on the bench opposite Emily. He looked at her—really looked at her—taking in the soot on her scrubs, the raw scrape on her knuckles, and the tired, defiant fire in her eyes.
"You're insane," Emily said quietly, breaking the silence. Her voice didn't have any anger left in it—just a profound, exhausted wonder. "You blow up docks, you dodge hit squads, you're the head of a criminal empire... and yet you let my dog sleep in your lap."
Dominic’s lips twitched into a genuine, soft smile—the first real smile she had seen on him since they met.
"Your dog has better instincts than anyone else in Westbridge," Dominic replied softly. "He knew I wouldn't hurt him. Or you."
"Why didn't you?" Emily asked, her dark eyes locking onto his. "You could have dropped me off at the curb when we left my street. You could have left me behind in the bunker. Why drag me through a war zone?"
Dominic reached out, his large, scarred hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her face. His touch was surprisingly tender for a man whose hands were stained with blood and power.
"Because the moment you grabbed my car door to save your dog, you stepped into my world," Dominic murmured, his voice dropping an octave, rich and resonant. "And in my world, Emily... I don't let go of the things that matter."
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. The air between them suddenly felt thick, heavy with an electric, undeniable tension that had nothing to do with the mafia, the federal task force, or the burning city across the bay.
Before either of them could lean closer, the satellite phone in Dominic’s pocket buzzed sharply.
Dominic pulled it out, his expression instantly shifting from warmth to cold, calculating focus as he read the encrypted text message on the screen.
"What is it?" Emily asked, a sudden knot forming in her stomach.
May you like
Dominic stood up, sliding the phone back into his jacket. He looked out over the water toward the skyline of Westbridge, where smoke was still rising into the grey clouds.
"The head of the federal task force—the man behind the corruption and the leaks—has just called a press conference," Dominic said coldly. "He’s naming me as the mastermind behind the city's entire criminal syndicate... and he has a special warrant for your arrest, Emily, as my primary accomplice."
