Chapter 4 - The Ledger of SecretsThe safehouse beneath the Moretti estate smelled of old paper, ozone, and damp stone. It was a subterranean bunker carved directly into the bedrock of Westbridge, illuminated by flickering fluorescent tubes that buzzed like angry hornets.

Emily sat on a metal folding chair, staring blankly at the steel desk in front of her. On top of it lay a thick, leather-bound ledger with water-stained pages and handwritten columns of names, bank routing numbers, and encrypted digital signatures.

Dominic stood near a stainless-steel sink, casually pouring hydrogen peroxide over the bullet wound in his shoulder. He winced slightly, his jaw tightening into rigid planes of muscle, but he didn't make a single sound.

"Let me help you," Emily said before she could stop herself. She stood up, walking over to the sink. "I'm a vet tech, not a surgeon, but I know how to clean and stitch a wound. That needs stitches, not just pressure."

Dominic looked at her through the cracked mirror above the sink. His dark eyes softened—just for a fraction of a second—before the heavy iron curtain fell back over them.

"You've already saved my life with a cast-iron skillet today, Emily. I think asking you to play nurse is pushing my luck."

"You're going to get an infection," she muttered, grabbing a clean gauze pad and a bottle of antiseptic from the open medical kit on the shelf. She nudged him aside with surprising authority. "Sit down. Before I let you bleed all over your precious ledger."

Dominic actually smiled—a slow, dangerous curve of his lips that sent a strange, forbidden flutter straight to Emily’s stomach. He sat down on the edge of the metal desk, watching her every move as she carefully cleaned the torn flesh of his shoulder.

"You're remarkably calm for someone who was kidnapped by a mafia boss six hours ago," Dominic observed quietly.

"I'm not calm. I'm in shock," Emily shot back, her fingers steady as she threaded a curved needle. "My apartment is probably being searched by crooked feds right now, my landlord is tied up in a warehouse, my dog is currently licking an assault rifle on the floor, and I'm stitching up a bullet wound in a dungeon. Calm doesn't even exist in my vocabulary anymore."

Bolt, true to her description, was sitting a few feet away, happily gnawing on the rubber strap of Agent Miller’s tactical helmet, which Dominic’s men had dragged down into the bunker.

Dominic chuckled, a deep, resonant sound. "Your dog has better survival instincts than you do. He knew exactly whose lap to climb into."

"He's a traitor," Emily murmured, concentrating fiercely on the stitch. "He loves everyone. If a burglar broke in with a slice of bacon, Bolt would help him pack the television."

"Good judge of character, then."

Emily paused, her needle hovering over his skin. She looked up, their faces inches apart. She could see the tiny amber flecks in his impossibly dark eyes, the heat radiating off his broad chest, the subtle scent of sandalwood and gunpowder mixing in the close air of the bunker.

"Why did they attack?" Emily asked softly, breaking the tension. "What's in that ledger?"

Dominic’s expression darkened instantly, the warmth vanishing from his face like smoke. He turned his head toward the leather-bound book on the desk.

"That ledger contains the names of every federal judge, police captain, and politician on my payroll," Dominic said coldly. "And it also contains the names of the men inside the Justice Department who have been selling state secrets to international cartels. Agent Miller wasn't trying to arrest me today, Emily. He was trying to execute me before I could hand this book to the Attorney General's internal affairs division."

Emily’s hands shook slightly. "You're... you're turning evidence in?"

"I'm cleaning house," Dominic corrected, his voice dropping an octave. "A criminal empire requires rules, Emily. Drug running, smuggling, protection—those are business. Betraying the city to foreign cartels that slaughter innocents? That's bad for business. And it's bad for Westbridge."

Before Emily could process the staggering revelation, the heavy steel door of the bunker slammed open.

Antonio rushed in, his face pale, holding a smoking tablet. "Boss, we've got a problem. The federal task force has surrounded the entire estate. And they've brought the media."
