Chapter 5 - The Siege at DawnThe grey light of dawn broke over Westbridge like a bruise. Through the bunker's high, grated security monitors, Emily watched the front lawn of the Moretti estate transform into a circus of flashing blue lights, satellite trucks, and dozens of heavily armored tactical units.

"They've designated the entire property a federal crime scene," Antonio reported, tapping frantically on the tablet. "They're claiming Dominic Moretti is harboring a fugitive terrorist cell inside the main house."

"They're framing us," Dominic said, his voice entirely devoid of panic. He stood up, shrugging on a clean black shirt that concealed the fresh stitches on his shoulder. He looked like an apex predator cornered in its den—dangerous, patient, and infinitely lethal.

"What do we do?" Emily asked, clutching Bolt to her chest as the puppy finally whimpered, sensing the rising tension in the room. "They're going to tear this place apart brick by brick."

"They can try," Dominic replied coldly. He walked over to a hidden panel behind the steel desk and punched a numeric sequence into a keypad. A section of the stone wall slid open with a deep, mechanical hiss, revealing a dark tunnel stretching into the earth. "This tunnel leads to the old stormwater drainage system beneath the city. It exits three miles away near the industrial harbor."

Emily stared at the dark opening, her stomach knotting. "An underground sewer? Are you kidding me?"

"Unless you want to spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary as my co-conspirator, I suggest you grab your dog and start walking," Dominic said, handing her a heavy tactical flashlight.

"I didn't choose this!" Emily protested, her voice rising in panic. "I just wanted to buy kibble! If I knew my dog had a radar for organized crime, I would have kept him on a ten-foot leash!"

Dominic stopped, turning back to face her. The dim light of the bunker cast sharp shadows across his carved features. He reached out, his large hand gently catching her chin, tilting her face upward so she was forced to look directly into his dark, unyielding eyes.

"Listen to me, Emily," he said, his voice dropping to a low, hypnotic register. "The moment you grabbed my car door, your life intersected with mine. In my world, connections aren't easily broken. You are under my protection now. Whether you like it or not."

Before she could form a coherent reply, a series of muffled explosions echoed from above. The ceiling shuddered, raining dust and tiny pebbles down onto their heads.

"They're breaching the main floor," Antonio warned, drawing his weapon. "Boss, we have to move. Now."

Dominic didn't wait. He grabbed Emily's hand, his grip warm and unbreakable, and pulled her into the dark, echoing depths of the tunnel, with Bolt trotting bravely at their heels as if they were heading out for a morning walk in the park.
