Chapter 4 - The DNA and the Double-CrossForty-eight hours later, the results were in.

Ethan didn't wait for the courier. He had Marcus pick up the sealed envelope directly from the private pathology lab in Manhattan.
By midnight, the estate was entirely dark except for the light burning in Ethan’s private study. He sat at his desk, the brown manila envelope lying unopened before him. He didn't need to open it. He knew. Every time he looked at Lily—who was now playing quietly with a set of wooden blocks in the adjacent sunroom—he saw his own childhood reflected back at him.
The door creaked open, and Rosa walked in. She looked exhausted, her posture stiff with apprehension.
"You wanted to see me?" she asked.
Ethan pushed the envelope across the mahogany desk. "Open it."
Rosa hesitated, her fingers trembling slightly as she picked up the paper knife. She slit the top, pulled out the multi-page lab report, and scanned straight to the bottom line.
Probability of Paternity: 99.99%.
The paper fluttered from her fingers, landing softly on the desk. She closed her eyes, a heavy sob escaping her lips. "I tried so hard to protect her from this world, Ethan. From men like your father. From people like Victoria."
"You did protect her," Ethan said, standing up and walking around the desk. He stopped right in front of her, his voice fierce and steady. "You protected her by being stronger than anyone I've ever known. But you don't have to do it alone anymore."
"You don't understand," Rosa said, opening her eyes, her gaze burning with sudden, fierce pride. "I'm not some trophy you can adopt to ease your conscience. I'm Rosa Martinez. I am a maid in this house. And my daughter is not a scandal for the morning tabloids."
"She’s not a scandal," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous growl. "She’s an heir. And starting tomorrow, the entire world is going to know it."
Before Rosa could answer, the study door flew open.
Marcus stood in the doorway, his face pale and urgent. "Boss, we have a massive problem. Richard Haynes just leaked the security footage from the east parlor to the press."
Ethan froze. "What footage?"
"The video of Victoria shoving Lily," Marcus said grimly. "Haynes spun it. He’s claiming that Rosa planted the child there to entrap Victoria, that the whole thing was an extortion plot orchestrated by a disgruntled employee, and that you’ve gone completely insane over a fabricated paternity claim."
Rosa’s face drained of all color. "Extortion? They’re turning it around on us?"
Ethan didn't panic. Instead, a terrifying, predatory smile spread across his face—the exact smile his competitors dreaded before he executed a hostile takeover.
"Marcus," Ethan said quietly.
"Sir?"
"Release the other footage."
Marcus blinked. "Which footage, Boss?"
"The security feed from the front gates four days ago," Ethan said, his eyes gleaming with cold fury. "The one where Victoria’s father called me on my cell, threatened to ruin my company if I didn't marry his daughter, and explicitly stated that he knew about Rosa and the child and intended to 'bury them both' if I didn't fall in line."

Marcus stared at him for a single second, then grinned. "It'll destroy the Haynes family holdings by market open tomorrow."
"Let it burn," Ethan said.
