Chapter 6 - The Underground SafehouseThe subterranean tunnels smelled of damp stone, rust, and decades of forgotten city history. Evelyn’s breath came in ragged gasps as she scrambled behind Adrian, her designer heels clicking frantically against the concrete floor. Every shadow looked like a gunman; every drip of water sounded like a silenced footstep.

They burst through a heavy steel door into an abandoned subway maintenance station that had been retrofitted into a high-tech tactical safehouse. Banks of glowing monitors cast an eerie blue light across the room, illuminating encrypted maps of New York's underworld networks.
Noah Briggs stepped out from the shadows, his breathing heavy, a shallow graze bleeding on his left forearm.
“Boss, the secure transport is compromised,” Noah reported sharply, his eyes flicking to Evelyn with undisguised hostility. “The hit squad knew our exact arrival time at the auction house. They were waiting for us.”
Adrian holstered his weapon, his face carved from stone. “Which means there’s a mole inside my inner circle.”
Noah stiffened, his jaw clenching. “Are you suggesting—”
“I’m not suggesting anything yet. But someone leaked our movements.” Adrian turned his piercing gaze onto Evelyn, who was leaning against a concrete pillar, trying to catch her breath. “And someone else has made you public enemy number one, Ms. Hart.”
Evelyn wiped a streak of soot from her cheek, her fear finally crystallizing into white-hot anger. She pushed off the pillar and marched right up to the feared mafia boss, poking a finger squarely into his chest.
“Let’s get one thing straight, Mr. Mercer!” she hissed, her voice trembling with adrenaline. “I didn't ask for any of this! I was minding my own business, appraising seventeenth-century trinkets, and your thugs dragged me into a bloodbath! If I’m going to be hunted by assassins, you’re going to tell me right now who is trying to frame me!”
Noah gasped at her audacity, his hand instantly moving toward his gun. “Watch your tone, you ungrateful—”
“Lower your weapon, Noah,” Adrian commanded quietly, never breaking eye contact with Evelyn. A slow, dangerous smirk touched the corner of his mouth. He seemed almost amused by her fiery defiance.
“You want answers, Evelyn?” Adrian asked, stepping closer. “The man who ordered the hit on the auction house is Viktor Vance—the ruthless head of the rival Syndicate controlling the docks. And he believes you hold the encryption key to the Rossi vault.”

“I don't have any key!”
“Viktor doesn’t care whether you have it or not,” Adrian replied grimly. “To him, you are a loose end. And in his world, loose ends are permanently tied off.”
