Chapter 7 - The Cipher in the BloodThe safehouse was dead silent except for the hum of the cooling fans on the server racks. Evelyn sat at a stainless-steel table, her fingers tracing the intricate engravings on the antique silver pocket watch Adrian had placed before her.

“Why me?” she whispered, staring at the intertwined serpents. “Out of all the appraisers in New York, why did Viktor Vance target my digital footprint?”

Adrian leaned against the edge of the table, his arms crossed over his chest. “Because your grandfather, Arthur Hart, wasn’t just a simple watchmaker. Thirty years ago, he was the exclusive horologist and vault architect for the Rossi family. He built the master lock for their underground depository.”

Evelyn’s eyes widened. Her grandfather had passed away when she was ten, leaving behind only a box of old tools and cryptic journals. She had spent years studying his notes, thinking they were just eccentric musings on antique mechanics.

“The journal,” Evelyn breathed out. “The journals he left me… they aren’t just notes on watch repair. They’re a manual for the vault mechanism.”

“Exactly,” Adrian said, his tone sharpening. “Viktor Vance knows the vault contains three hundred million in unwashed diamonds, bearer bonds, and incriminating evidence that can bring down half the city’s political elite—including the mayor. Viktor wants that money to fund a complete takeover of New York’s shipping lanes. And you are the only person on earth who can open it.”

Noah stepped forward, slamming a tactical tablet onto the table. Satellite feeds and street cameras flickered across the screen, showing armed mercenaries swarming the streets above their safehouse location.

“Boss, they found us faster than expected. Vance’s cleanup crew is sealing the exits. We have twenty minutes before they breach this bunker.”

Adrian looked down at Evelyn. The playful arrogance was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, calculating intensity.

“We have to move,” Adrian said, offering his hand to her across the table. “And this time, Evelyn, you’re not running away. We’re going on the offensive.”

Evelyn looked at his outstretched hand. The man was a criminal kingpin, a ruthless operator who lived by the law of the gun. But he was also her only shield against execution.

She placed her hand in his. His grip was firm, warm, and absolute.
