Chapter 8 - Fire on the HudsonThe blacked-out armored SUV tore through the midnight rain, its tires hissing against the slick asphalt of the West Side Highway. In the backseat, Evelyn clutched the antique pocket watch like a lifeline, while Adrian furiously coordinated tactical movements on an encrypted satellite phone.
“The Brooklyn shipyard,” Adrian instructed Noah, who was driving at breakneck speed. “Viktor thinks we’re running north. We’re going straight into the lion’s den.”
“Boss, that’s a suicide mission,” Noah warned, glancing in the rearview mirror. “Vance has a small army waiting at the docks.”
“Then we’ll give them a war,” Adrian replied calmly, sliding a fresh magazine into his sidearm. He turned to Evelyn, his gray eyes softening by a fraction. “Are you ready for this, Evelyn? Because once we walk into that shipping container terminal, there is no turning back to your quiet life.”
Evelyn looked out the bulletproof window at the glittering, indifferent skyline of Manhattan. The quiet life of a widowed librarian wrap-dress wearer was already dead. The woman who had taken that truffle slider at the Meridian Club was gone, replaced by someone forged in the crucible of survival.
“My grandfather taught me that every complex lock has a weakness,” Evelyn said, her voice steady and resolute. “Lead me to the vault, Adrian. I’ll show you how to break it.”
Twenty minutes later, the SUV slammed to a halt behind a row of rusted shipping containers at Pier 42. The salty sea breeze whipped Evelyn’s hair across her face as the distant sound of heavy gunfire echoed across the dark water.
