Chapter 9 - The Final LockSparks showered down from overhead as grinding tools tore into the outer casing of the massive steel vault door. Inside the dimly lit subterranean chamber, the air was thick with the scent of ozone, damp earth, and ancient history.

Evelyn knelt before the colossal circular brass dial of the vault, her fingers flying across the intricate mechanical tumblers with the precision of a surgeon. Her grandfather’s journals were burned into her memory line by line.

Behind her, the heavy metal security door of the warehouse shook under the brutal assault of Viktor Vance’s enforcers. Heavy gunfire echoed through the outer corridors.

“How much longer, Evelyn?” Adrian shouted over the din, firing his rifle through a reinforced viewing slit at the approaching shadow figures in the hall.

“The final tumbler is jammed with anti-tamper chemical seals!” Evelyn yelled back, sweat and soot streaming down her face, her hands bleeding from a jagged edge on the brass mechanism. “If I miscalculate by a millimeter, the entire vault core floods with acid!”

Suddenly, the inner reinforced door of the warehouse breached. A hail of bullets shattered the stone pillars around them.

Noah staggered back, clutching a severe wound to his shoulder, but he kept firing until his rifle clicked empty. “Boss! They’re through the secondary gate!”

Adrian didn’t hesitate. He dropped his empty rifle, drew his combat knife, and stepped backward to shield Evelyn with his own body, his face a mask of absolute, lethal determination.

“Evelyn. Now,” Adrian whispered over the roar of the impending final assault.

Evelyn closed her eyes, visualizing her grandfather’s hands, listening to the delicate, rhythmic clicks of the brass tumblers beneath her bleeding fingertips. She felt the ancient mechanism shift.
