CHAPTER 10 – THE LAST KING'S CHOICE

The throne room fell into absolute silence.

King Adrian stood frozen, staring at the man who wore his face.

Prince Lucien smiled as though he had waited his entire life for this moment.

Behind him, hundreds of masked followers slowly surrounded the royal guards.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Finally, Adrian spoke.

"If you're truly the heir... why hide for thirty years?"

Lucien's smile faded.

"Because I wasn't hiding."

"I was imprisoned."

Lucien stepped toward the throne.

"When my mother switched us, she believed she had destroyed the curse."

He laughed bitterly.

"Instead... she condemned her own son."

He pulled back the collar of his cloak.

Black veins spread across his neck like burning roots.

"The curse chose me the night I was born."

"It whispered to me."

"It fed on me."

"It turned every person who loved me into dust."

His voice trembled—not with fear, but with years of unbearable loneliness.

"I didn't come here because I want your throne."

"I came because I'm dying."

"And when I die..."

"The curse will seek another king."

Elisa stepped forward.

"No."

"The curse was destroyed."

Lucien looked directly at her.

"Destroyed?"

He opened his hand.

Resting in his palm was a tiny shard of black crystal, no larger than a fingernail.

"The Chancellor prepared for betrayal."

"This fragment survived."

As everyone watched...

The crystal slowly melted into Lucien's skin.

The black veins spread across his entire body.

The palace floor shook violently.

The stained-glass windows shattered.

A deep voice echoed through the throne room.

Not Lucien's voice.

The curse had returned.

Darkness poured from Lucien's body like smoke.

It wrapped itself around pillars, walls, and ceilings.

Soldiers dropped their weapons.

Servants screamed.

The same ancient whisper that had haunted the palace for centuries returned.

"A king must always pay..."

Adrian drew his sword.

It shattered the moment it touched the darkness.

Every weapon failed.

Every arrow dissolved before reaching Lucien.

Only Elisa remained calm.

Then she remembered the words Miriam had spoken many years before her death.

"Darkness can never be destroyed by another weapon."

"Only by the one thing it can never understand..."

"A willing sacrifice."

Elisa suddenly understood.

The curse had survived for centuries because every sacrifice had been forced.

No one had ever chosen freely.

She looked at Adrian.

He understood without a word.

Before she could move...

He stepped in front of Lucien.

"No."

"It's my turn."

Adrian removed his crown.

Then, to the horror of the entire court, he laid it at Lucien's feet.

"I was never born a king."

"I became one by choice."

"So today..."

"I choose to end this."

He closed his eyes.

"I willingly offer my life."

The curse laughed.

Its shadow swallowed Adrian completely.

For several terrifying seconds...

Everything became silent.

Then something impossible happened.

The darkness began to scream.

Not in triumph.

In agony.

Golden light burst from Adrian's chest.

The curse tried to consume a man who had surrendered not out of fear...

But out of love for his people.

It could feed only on terror, greed, and betrayal.

It could not survive selfless sacrifice.

The black smoke cracked apart.

Lucien collapsed to his knees.

The crystal fragment exploded into dust.

A blinding wave of light swept through the palace.

Every trace of the curse vanished.

Forever.

When the light faded...

Adrian was still alive.

Lucien stared at him in disbelief.

"How...?"

Elisa smiled through tears.

"The curse believed every king feared death."

"It never imagined one would welcome it to save others."

Lucien broke down.

For the first time in his life, he wept—not from pain, but from freedom.

The darkness that had lived inside him since birth was finally gone.

He fell to his knees before Adrian.

"I spent my whole life hating the man who stole my crown."

Adrian lifted him to his feet.

"I never stole it."

"It was never ours."

"It belongs only to the people."

Months later, Adrian summoned the entire kingdom to the palace square.

More than fifty thousand people gathered beneath the castle walls.

Instead of wearing royal robes, Adrian appeared in simple clothing.

Beside him stood Elisa.

And beside her stood Lucien.

The crowd watched in stunned silence as Adrian placed the royal crown upon a stone pedestal.

He did not put it on.

Instead, he addressed his people.

"My ancestors believed a kingdom could survive through fear."

"They were wrong."

"A ruler is not made by blood..."

"...or by a crown."

"A ruler is chosen every day by the trust of the people."

With those words, he ordered the ancient throne melted down and recast into thousands of farming tools, school bells, and hospital instruments to serve the kingdom instead of ruling it.

As for Elisa, the forgotten illegitimate daughter who had once walked into a room where every woman before her had died, history remembered her not as a queen...

But as the woman who ended a curse that no army, no king, and no sword had been able to defeat.

And for centuries afterward, parents throughout the kingdom told their children one simple truth before bedtime:

"The strongest person is not the one who wears the crown... but the one who has the courage to lay it down."
