CHAPTER 3 – THE WOMAN WHO BROKE THE CURSE

The shadow surged toward Elisa.

The candles shattered.

The windows burst inward.

Every ghost in the chamber screamed as the creature spread across the floor like living darkness.

King Adrian grabbed his sword.

The blade passed straight through it.

Nothing happened.

The monster laughed with the voices of every woman who had died before sunrise.

"You cannot kill what your ancestors created."

Adrian staggered backward.

"So it was true..."

"My family made a bargain."

The creature answered.

"A king desired endless victory."

"He offered me one life every night."

"In return..."

"I built an empire."

Elisa suddenly understood.

The kingdom had never been protected by courage.

It had been purchased.

With innocent lives.

The old healer's final lesson echoed in her memory:

"Every curse has two chains."

"One binds the victim."

"The other binds the liar who keeps the secret."

She looked at Adrian.

"You've never chosen these women."

He shook his head.

"I wake each dawn with blood on my soul and no memory of the night."

"The curse erased your memory so you would never break the bargain."

Elisa pulled a small silver vial from her sleeve.

It contained an herbal mixture she had prepared before leaving home.

Not poison.

A truth serum made from rare mountain plants.

She poured it into the fire.

Golden flames roared through the chamber.

The creature shrieked.

Its body became transparent.

For the first time...

Its true form appeared.

It was not a demon.

It was the shattered soul of the first king who had betrayed his own people centuries earlier.

His greed had transformed him into an immortal parasite that survived by stealing the life force of young women.

The royal bloodline had been chained to him ever since.

"You are not feeding on women," Elisa said.

"You are feeding on guilt."

The spirit roared.

"Guilt is stronger than blood."

Elisa smiled.

"Not stronger than forgiveness."

She turned to Adrian.

"There is only one way."

He understood immediately.

"If I die..."

"The bargain ends."

Elisa shook her head.

"No."

"The man who made the bargain is already dead."

She walked toward the ancient throne standing at the end of the chamber.

Its base was carved with forgotten runes.

Hidden beneath the throne was a black crystal pulsing like a heart.

"This is the real prison."

She raised Adrian's sword.

The creature lunged.

Hundreds of ghostly hands reached out—not to stop her, but to protect her.

With one powerful strike...

The crystal shattered.

A deafening scream echoed through the palace.

The shadow dissolved into thousands of sparks.

The ghosts smiled for the first time in centuries.

One by one, they disappeared into the morning light.

When the palace doors opened at dawn, the servants rushed inside, expecting another body beneath a white sheet.

Instead...

They found King Adrian and Elisa standing together beside a room filled with broken chains and shattered black crystal.

No corpse.

No blood.

No curse.

The royal physicians could not explain what had happened.

Neither could the nobles.

Only one old maid fell to her knees and whispered,

"The palace... is finally silent."

Weeks later, Adrian gathered every noble family in the kingdom.

He revealed the ancient bargain, abolished the cruel decree forever, and ordered the royal chronicles to record the names of every innocent woman who had been sacrificed, so none would ever be forgotten.

As for Elisa...

The people expected her to become queen.

She refused.

Instead, she founded the kingdom's first great house of healing, where rich and poor alike received care without payment.

Years later, travelers still told the story of the king who broke a centuries-old curse—but the wisest among them always corrected one detail.

May you like

"It wasn't the king who saved the kingdom."

"It was the forgotten daughter no one believed would survive the night."
