CHAPTER 6 – THE KING WHO CHOSE TO DIE

Adrian awoke in chains.

Across the cavern stood twelve crystal pillars.

Inside each floated the spirit of a former king.

Their faces were twisted by centuries of regret.

One opened his eyes.

It was Adrian's father.

"My son..."

"Don't fight him."

Adrian's voice shook.

"Father?"

"I failed."

"We all failed."

"The curse feeds on kings willing to rule through fear."

Nearby, Elisa had also been captured.

The First Chancellor stood before her holding a newborn child.

"Do you know who this is?"

She stared in horror.

The baby wore a tiny silver bracelet bearing the royal crest.

"The queen of the western province gave birth yesterday."

He smiled.

"Every royal child carries the blood."

"The curse always has another heir."

Elisa realized the terrible truth.

Even if Adrian died...

The darkness would simply choose another ruler.

Unless its creator was destroyed forever.

She secretly reached into her sleeve.

The old healer had given her one final gift years ago.

A tiny seed.

"If the day ever comes when darkness cannot be defeated..."

"...plant this."

Without hesitation Elisa crushed the seed against the stone floor.

Nothing happened.

The Chancellor laughed.

Then...

A single green vine emerged through solid rock.

Within seconds dozens followed.

The vines wrapped around every crystal pillar.

Light burst through the cavern.

The imprisoned kings began to awaken.

One by one they stepped free.

Not as monsters.

As men.

The curse had imprisoned their souls—but it had never erased their humanity.

The First Chancellor screamed.

"No!"

"You belong to me!"

The former kings turned toward him.

For centuries they had obeyed his lies.

Now...

They judged him together.

Twelve swords of light appeared in their hands.

Adrian stepped forward with the thirteenth.

"You taught us that fear keeps a kingdom alive."

He raised his blade.

"My people taught me something stronger."

"Hope."

All thirteen swords struck at once.

The Chancellor's body shattered into ash.

Every remaining crystal exploded.

The cavern collapsed.

The curse disappeared forever.

When Adrian and Elisa emerged into the sunlight, the former kings were gone.

Only thirteen ancient crowns remained resting quietly on the grass.

Adrian buried them beneath an oak tree instead of returning them to the palace.

"No ruler," he declared, "should ever wear a crown built on innocent blood."

Years later, children would ask why no king in Valedorn wore a jeweled crown.

Their parents would smile and answer:

"Because the greatest king our kingdom ever had learned that a ruler earns loyalty with justice—not fear. And he could only learn that because one forgotten young woman walked into a room where everyone else had gone to die... and came back alive."
