CHAPTER 1 — The Old Man Nobody Wanted

Every Monday morning, before the executives arrived, an old man quietly swept the marble floors of Sterling Global Headquarters.

His name was Walter Hayes.

Seventy-four years old.

Worn-out work boots.

A faded gray jacket with patched elbows.

Wrinkled hands that never stopped shaking.

Most employees never even looked at him.

Some didn't know his name.

Others called him...

"The old ghost."

Young interns laughed whenever they passed him.

"Hey, Grandpa... still alive?"

Someone deliberately knocked over his cleaning bucket.

Water spread across the polished floor.

The hallway exploded with laughter.

Walter simply smiled.

"No worries," he whispered.

"I'll clean it."

The security guards watched.

Nobody helped.

Because around Sterling Global...

kindness wasn't considered profitable.

The company's annual Investor Gala was only hours away.

Every executive wore custom-made suits worth thousands of dollars.

Luxury cars lined the entrance.

Reporters gathered outside.

Inside...

Walter quietly polished the giant crystal staircase.

Then...

a junior executive accidentally spilled expensive champagne across his own designer shoes.

Without thinking...

he blamed Walter.

"You useless old fool!"

The entire lobby went silent.

The executive shoved Walter backward.

The old man stumbled.

His bucket rolled down the marble stairs.

Water splashed across dozens of guests.

Gasps echoed everywhere.

The executive's face turned red.

"You've ruined everything!"

He grabbed Walter by the collar.

"I want this janitor fired before the CEO gets here!"

Employees nodded eagerly.

Someone laughed.

Someone recorded everything on a phone.

Nobody noticed...

Walter never argued.

He only looked toward the front entrance...

as if he were waiting for someone.

Exactly then...

the revolving doors opened.

Three black SUVs stopped outside.

Everyone straightened their jackets.

"The CEO is here!"

Within seconds...

bodyguards entered first.

Then came Adrian Sterling.

Forty-two.

America's youngest billionaire CEO.

Known for firing vice presidents with a single sentence.

Feared by everyone.

The executive smiled confidently.

Perfect timing.

He dragged Walter toward Adrian.

"Sir..."

"This janitor embarrassed the entire company."

"I've already decided to fire him."

Silence.

Adrian slowly removed his sunglasses.

His eyes landed on the trembling old man.

His expression changed.

Confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then...

his lips began shaking.

No one understood why.

Until...

the most powerful CEO in the building suddenly rushed forward.

And before anyone could react...

he dropped to both knees.

His voice cracked.

"Father..."

The entire lobby froze.

Phones slipped from trembling hands.

No one breathed.

Because the billionaire everyone feared...

May you like

was crying.
