CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Buried for Thirty Years

The lobby stayed frozen.
The young executive who had shouted at Walter went pale.
Adrian Sterling, the billionaire CEO, was still on his knees, gripping the old man's rough hands like a lost child.
Walter looked down at him.
His tired eyes filled with tears.
"You grew up well," the old man whispered.
Adrian shook his head.
"No..."
"You disappeared."
Everyone stared.
The reporters at the entrance lifted their cameras.
Employees who had laughed minutes earlier slowly lowered their phones.
Adrian stood and turned to the entire lobby.
His voice was cold.
"Who touched him?"
No one answered.
Then the spilled water on the floor seemed louder than any confession.
The junior executive trembled.
"Sir, I didn't know he was—"
"My father?"
Adrian's eyes darkened.
"You didn't need to know who he was to treat him like a human being."
Security stepped forward.
But Walter gently raised his hand.
"Don't fire him yet."
Everyone gasped.
Adrian turned.
"Father, after what he did?"
Walter looked at the executive.
Then at the crowd.
"He is not the real problem."
A strange silence fell.
Walter reached into his old jacket and pulled out a worn envelope.
Inside was a yellowed photograph.
A young Walter.
A newborn baby.
And standing beside them...
Adrian's mother.
But there was another person in the picture.
Victor Sterling.
The company's dead founder.
Adrian's adoptive father.
Adrian stared at the photograph.
"What is this?"
Walter's voice broke.
"Your mother never abandoned you."
"Victor took you."
The lobby erupted in whispers.
Adrian stepped back.
"What?"
Walter nodded slowly.
"Thirty-nine years ago, your mother worked as a housekeeper for Victor Sterling. She discovered he was stealing from his own investors. She was going to report him."
His hands trembled.
"That night, she vanished."
Adrian's face lost all color.
Walter continued.
"I searched for you both for years. Victor told everyone your mother was unstable. He told the court you had no living father."
"And me?"
Adrian's voice cracked.
Walter's tears fell.
"I was arrested for a crime I didn't commit."
Adrian could barely breathe.
Everything he knew...
his childhood...
his name...
his empire...
had been built on a lie.
Then Walter looked toward the board members gathered near the staircase.
"Victor is dead."
"But the people who helped him..."
"are still in this building."
At that exact moment...
one elderly board member tried to leave.
May you like
Adrian turned sharply.
"Lock the doors."
