CHAPTER 9 — ONE YEAR LATER… THE BOY RETURNED TO THE ARENA, AND NO ONE COULD BELIEVE WHAT THEY SAW

Exactly one year after the day that changed everything, the village festival returned.
The same wooden arena stood beneath the blazing summer sun.
The same stands were packed with spectators.
But this time, no one had come to watch a dangerous challenge.
They had come to witness a miracle.
Where banners advertising bull-taming contests had once hung, new signs now read:
"Festival of Respect for Animals."
There would be no whips.
No ropes.
No cruelty.
Only demonstrations of trust between humans and animals.
Don Mateo had kept his promise.
Using his own money—and adding far more than the original €100,000 reward—he transformed the old ranch into the Gabriel Morales Animal Sanctuary, where abused and abandoned animals could recover in safety.
Families traveled from across the country to visit.
Children learned that courage wasn't about defeating animals...
It was about understanding them.
As the ceremony began, the crowd suddenly erupted into applause.
The fifteen-year-old boy walked into the arena.
He was no longer the frightened child people had laughed at.
Though still dressed simply, he carried himself with quiet confidence.
Beside him walked Demon.
No chains.
No muzzle.
No handlers.
Just the boy... and the giant black bull moving calmly at his side.
The silence that followed was unlike the silence of fear from a year earlier.
This was silence born of respect.
The mayor stepped onto the stage.
"A year ago, this arena was built on fear."
"Today..."
"It stands for compassion."
The entire audience rose to their feet.
Many wiped tears from their eyes.
The boy gently placed his hand on Demon's forehead.
The bull lowered his head peacefully.
At that moment, thousands of cameras captured an image that would soon spread across newspapers and television screens:
The animal once called a monster...
Standing quietly beside the boy who had chosen kindness instead of violence.
But just as the applause reached its loudest point, one of the sanctuary workers came running across the field.
He looked frightened.
"There's been an accident!"
Everyone turned.
"A truck has overturned near the mountain road..."
"There are frightened animals trapped inside."

Without hesitation, the boy looked at Demon.
The bull was already moving.
