Chapter 1 - The Audit Begins

The silence in the grand lobby was suffocating. The polished marble, which had just reflected the smug condescension of the staff, now caught the stark pale light of panic. The receptionist, whose name tag read Claire, stood frozen behind the desk. Her pristine corporate composure had shattered into trembling hands and an ash-white complexion.
"Sir... please," Claire stammered, stepping out from behind the counter, her high heels clicking loudly against the silence. "There has been a complete misunderstanding. If you had just presented your credentials at the door..."
"If I had presented my credentials at the door," Ethan Vance replied, his voice a low, measured baritone that commanded the entire room, "I would have been served sparkling water and offered a suite on the penthouse floor. And I wouldn't have seen how your staff treats a human being who doesn't look like they own a hedge fund."
Ethan slowly unbuttoned the worn brown coat, letting it slip off his shoulders to reveal a tailored Savile Row suit underneath. He hung the ragged coat over his arm like a trophy—or a sentence.
The security guard, Marcus, took three steps back, his hands completely clear of his belt, sweat glistening on his forehead. "Mr. Vance... I was only following protocol..."
"Protocol?" Ethan snapped, his eyes locking onto the guard. "Your protocol is to physically assault anyone who looks poor? Good to know. It’s going straight into Section 4 of the compliance report."
Before Marcus could answer, the private elevator doors at the back of the lobby chimed. A group of five men in sharp black suits hurried out, led by an older man with graying hair and an immaculate tuxedo. It was Julian Sterling, the Regional Managing Director of the Sovereign Luxury Group.
Julian ran toward Ethan, completely ignoring the stunned hotel guests who were now recording the scene on their phones.
"Ethan!" Julian breathed out, clutching his chest. "We were expecting you at 9:00 PM! We had the VIP private entrance prepped!"
"That was the point, Julian," Ethan said, tapping the silver badge pinned to his lapel—the crest of the International Hospitality Standards Authority (IHSA), the governing body that possessed the power to revoke five-star licenses and freeze corporate assets overnight. "You prepared for a king. I tested you as a beggar. And your hotel failed within thirty seconds."
Julian turned toward Claire, his eyes flashing with lethal fury. "Claire, clear your desk. You’re terminated. Marcus, surrender your badge to security immediately."
"Wait," Ethan interjected, raising a single hand. "Don't fire them yet, Julian. That’s too easy. They aren't the only ones on trial tonight." Ethan opened his briefcase fully, revealing not just inspection forms, but black leather folders marked with red security seals. "This isn't a routine service check. The IHSA received an anonymous tip three days ago. Human trafficking, money laundering, and safety violations under your watch."

Julian’s face drained of color. "What? That’s impossible! We run a clean operation!"
"Then you won't mind if my team conducts a full-building audit right now," Ethan said calmly. "Lock down the exits. Nobody leaves. Not the staff, not the management... and especially not your high-profile guests on the 14th floor."
