Chapter 8 - The Final Check-Out (Surprise Ending)

Armed tactical officers poured into the sub-basement, lasers painting the room in crisscrossing red grids.
Lord Arthur dropped the detonator, throwing his hands in the air immediately. Julian threw himself onto the floor, screaming his surrender.
Evelyn Vance stood perfectly still, her champagne glass slipping from her fingers and shattering on the hard concrete. She stared at her son with a mix of icy hatred and terrifying pride.
"You destroyed everything, Ethan," she whispered as two federal officers grabbed her arms and forced them behind her back. "You destroyed our family legacy."
"No, Mother," Ethan said, stepping closer and looking her dead in the eye. "You destroyed it when you forgot the first rule of hospitality."
"And what rule is that?" she spat.
"The customer is always watching."
Ethan turned on his heel and walked toward the exit, stepping over the shattered glass.
ONE MONTH LATERThe Grand Sovereign Hotel was no longer grand.
Its golden letters had been pried off the front facade. The building was seized by the federal government, its doors chained shut under heavy police guard.
Ethan Vance stood across the street, wearing a casual leather jacket, watching the demolition crews setup their equipment. Lord Arthur Sterling and Evelyn Vance were currently awaiting trial in a maximum-security federal facility, facing charges that carried life sentences without parole.
A sleek black town car pulled up to the curb beside Ethan. The rear window rolled down.
Inside sat Claire—the hotel receptionist who had pushed his briefcase away on that fateful night.
She was no longer wearing her corporate uniform. She wore a tailored charcoal suit, and around her neck hung an official badge of the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation Division.
Ethan walked over, leaning against the car window with a small smile.
"Nice suit, Claire," Ethan said. "A lot better than the receptionist outfit."
"It was itchy as hell," Claire replied with a smirk, handing him a sealed Manila envelope. "Great performance in the lobby, by the way. Your 'tired, poor man' routine almost made me break character. Pushing that briefcase back with two fingers was a nice touch, wasn't it?"
"It went viral," Ethan laughed, taking the envelope. "The internet loved to hate you."
"Let them," Claire said, looking back at the doomed hotel. "They have no idea that the 'snobbish receptionist' was the undercover lead agent who placed the server bug in the front desk three months ago."
Ethan opened the envelope. Inside was a new assignment, complete with a fresh set of forged identity papers and a new badge.
"Where to next?" Ethan asked.
Claire smiled, shifting the car into gear. "A seven-star resort in Dubai. The owner thinks he's invisible."
Ethan zipped up his jacket, picked up his weathered brown briefcase, and slid into the passenger seat.
