Chapter 6 - Mother of Deception

Ethan froze, his gun still trained on the doorway. His brain struggled to process the vision in front of him.
"Put the weapon down, Ethan," Evelyn Vance said smoothly, taking a slow sip of her champagne. "You're going to ruin the suit. I had it custom-tailored for your inspection tonight."
"Mother...?" Ethan’s voice cracked slightly, the cold professionalism he had carried all night momentarily shattering. "What is this? What are you doing down here?"
Julian stumbled back in shock. "Director Vance? You're... you're working with my father?"
Evelyn chuckled softly, a cold, melodious sound that sent chills down Ethan's spine. "Working with him? Oh, Julian, darling. Your father works for me. He has for twenty years."
The pieces began falling into place in Ethan's mind like a cascade of ice. The anonymous tip. The seamless framing. The pre-written news stories. The badge he carried.
"The ragged coat..." Ethan whispered, his eyes widening. "The poor man routine at reception..."
"It was a spectacle, Ethan," Evelyn said, walking forward, her heels clicking on the rough concrete. "We needed you to create a massive, highly public scene in the lobby. We needed the media focused on a 'shocking abuse of power by hotel staff' so every eye in the city was glued to this address. A distraction."
"A distraction for what?" Ethan demanded.
"For the transfer," Evelyn replied, gesturing to the rows of servers inside the vault. "Tonight, three billion dollars in dark-web crypto holdings are being funneled through this hotel's private server node into offshore accounts. By the time the police breach this building to 'arrest' you for corruption, the money will be gone, the server logs will point entirely to your credentials, and I will be weeping on national television about my rogue son who succumbed to greed."
"You're sacrificing your own son?" Ethan said, his voice deadly quiet.
"I built you for this, Ethan," Evelyn said without a trace of remorse. "Why do you think I pushed you into the agency? Why do you think I gave you this high-profile inspection assignment? You were always meant to be the ultimate burn-card."

From the shadows behind Evelyn, Lord Arthur Sterling stepped forward, a smug grin plastered across his face.
"It's over, Agent Vance," Arthur said, pulling a remote detonator from his pocket. "The SWAT team is entering the lobby now. In two minutes, charges on the support pillars will fire, isolating this basement forever. You and my idiot son will be buried under fifty feet of marble, branded as traitors to the state."
