Chapter 6 - The Reunion of Blood and AshesThe boardroom fell into a dead, reverent hush. Every eye in the room snapped toward the doorway.

Grace looked older, her face bearing the hardened, weary lines of a woman who had spent seven years fighting a silent war in the dark. But those unforgettable emerald eyes blazed with a fierce, unyielding light.
"Mommy?" Lily’s voice echoed down the corridor as she came running up behind them, skidding to a halt. She looked back and forth between Grace and Emma, her wide eyes blinking in utter bewilderment. "Wait... we have two mommies? Or is she...?"
Grace dropped to her knees, opening her arms wide. Lily didn't hesitate; she launched herself straight into her mother's embrace, sobbing tears of pure joy and confusion.
I stood paralyzed a few feet away. My chest heaved. Seven years of cold, calculated grief dissolved into a searing, overwhelming rush of heat.
Grace looked up from hugging Lily, her gaze locking onto mine. For a long, agonizing moment, neither of us moved. The corporate sharks, the police, the handcuffs on Victoria—everything faded into white noise.
Slowly, I walked across the plush carpet and knelt beside them. I reached out a trembling hand, my fingers brushing against Grace's cheek. Her skin was warm, real, and trembling.
"You're real," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion I hadn't allowed myself to feel since the day I buried an empty casket. "You're actually here."
"I never left, Marcus," Grace whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. "Every single day, I watched you from the shadows. I watched you raise our daughter. I knew how much it hurt you... but it was the only way to keep you both breathing."
She pulled Emma into the circle, wrapping both children in her arms.
"And Emma?" I asked softly, my gaze flickering to the little girl who shared my daughter's face. "Is she...?"
"She's ours," Grace nodded, a fierce smile breaking through her tears. "Born two years after I went underground, when I thought I was safe for a brief, beautiful moment. I named her after my grandmother... and hid her with Karen when Arthur’s corporate bounty hunters started closing in on my safehouse in Seattle."
Arthur Sterling, sensing his entire world crumbling, made a desperate lunge for the door. But David was faster. With a swift, practiced motion, David grabbed Arthur by the collar and slammed him back down into his leather chair, clicking a second pair of steel cuffs around his wrists.

"It's over, Arthur," I said, standing up and towering over the architect of my misery. "Your assets are frozen. Your offshore accounts are flagged. And by morning, you'll be sharing a cell with your co-conspirator."
As police sirens wailed up from the street far below, signaling the arrival of federal agents, I looked down at my reunited family. The nightmare was over. Or so I foolishly believed.
