Chapter 8 - Darkness Within the WallsAbsolute darkness swallowed the study. The emergency backup generators, designed to kick in within three seconds of a power failure, remained stubbornly dead. Someone had severed the master grid and disabled the localized failsafes from an internal terminal.

"David," I spoke into my tactical wrist communicator, my voice low and urgent. "Report."

Static hissed through the speaker. Then, a groaning sound followed by dead silence.

My heart hammered against my ribs. David was a former Navy SEAL; if he had been neutralized silently, whoever had breached the estate was operating at an elite, military grade.

I drew my customized Sig Sauer P226 from its holster beneath my arm, clicking off the safety with a sharp click. I moved silently toward the study door, pressing my back against the wall.

"Marcus?"

Grace’s voice whispered from the hallway just outside the door. She was barefoot, wearing a simple dark sweater, holding a heavy brass candlestick like a club. Her eyes reflected the pale moonlight pouring through the tall arched windows.

"Stay behind me," I ordered, grabbing her arm and pulling her into the shelter of the doorway. "They're here."

"I know," she breathed, her jaw set with fierce resolve. "I saw the infrared sensors tripping on the north perimeter wall. They aren't corporate hitmen, Marcus. They're part of the syndicate that funded Arthur's black-ops division. They want Emma."

"Why Emma?" I demanded, keeping my weapon raised as we crept down the grand hallway toward the children's wing.

"Because of what she is," Grace whispered frantically. "My father's biotechnology patents weren't just about financial algorithms or neural networks. They were genetic. Emma inherited my father's accelerated cellular regeneration markers. To them, she's not a child—she's a biological prototype worth billions."

The revelation hit me like a physical blow. Grace hadn't just faked her death to escape corporate greed; she had run to protect an unborn child engineered by her scientist father's experimental genetic trials—trials that the syndicate wanted to weaponize.

Suddenly, a muffled crash echoed from the upstairs nursery.

"Lily!" Grace gasped, dropping caution and sprinting blindly up the curved grand staircase.

"Grace, wait!" I shouted, chasing right behind her.

We burst through the double doors of the nursery. The moon illuminated the room in ghostly silver light. The window was shattered into a thousand glittering shards.

Lily was huddled under her bed, shaking and crying hysterically.

But the twin bed beside hers was empty.

Emma was gone.
