Chapter 6 - THE TRUE MASTERMIND

My mind reeled. "What?"
Vance pulled out a secure tablet and tapped the screen, showing me a series of encrypted emails dating back three years—long before I went on my latest covert assignment.
"Grant didn't fall into this out of temptation, Evelyn," Vance explained, his voice low and serious. "Three years ago, Grant’s firm was going bankrupt. He discovered that your mother’s trust had a clause: if you were to die in the line of duty, full control of the Vance fortune would revert to him as Lily’s sole surviving guardian."
I stared at the screen. The emails showed Grant actively bidding on black-market contracts, offering up my team's classified travel routes to high-bidding international cartels.
He hadn't just taken advantage of my absence. He had engineered my deployment. He had orchestrated the entire operation to get me killed in the frozen woods of Minnesota.
"He tried to have me killed three times," I whispered, the weight of the betrayal hitting me like a physical blow.
"Yes," Vance nodded. "And when you kept surviving every trap because of your training, he got desperate. He killed your mother to get control of the partial trust, brought in Vanessa to handle the defense network leaks, and started abusing Lily to break her spirit so she wouldn't talk."
A dark, terrifying rage, quiet and absolute, settled deep inside my soul.
I looked across the yard. Grant was being shoved into the back of a black federal transport van. He looked back at me through the rain, his face pale, screaming something behind the glass that I couldn't hear.
"Where are they taking him?" I asked Vance.
"To the federal detention facility in downtown Denver," Vance replied. "He’s being charged with treason, federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and first-degree murder of your mother."
"He won't make it to trial," I said suddenly.
Vance looked at me, his eyes sharp. "Evelyn... don't do anything stupid. You're a decorated officer."
"I'm not going to kill him, Commander," I said, turning to look at Lily, who was currently sitting in the back of an ambulance, wearing a warm blanket, sipping hot chocolate while a medic checked her small wrists. "Death is too easy for him. I want him to lose everything. Piece by piece."
I walked over to the ambulance and climbed inside, sitting beside my daughter.
Lily looked up at me, her eyes clear for the first time in weeks. She reached into her small pocket and pulled out a crumpling piece of paper.
"Mommy..." she whispered, handing it to me. "I hid this... for you."
I unfolded the dirty, wrinkled paper. It was a handwritten contract signed by Grant and Richard Vale—and at the bottom, a secret bank account number listed in the Cayman Islands containing $40 million in stolen cartel funds.
