Chapter 1 - The First KnockThe morning sunlight sliced through the sheer curtains of my quiet, empty apartment like a razor blade. I had slept like a stone, knowing that miles across the city, an absolute catastrophe was unfolding in high definition. My phone buzzed aggressively against the nightstand—a barrage of frantic missed calls and text messages.

Before I could even unlock the screen, the front door rattled violently. Someone was pounding on it with the fury of a betrayed matriarch.

I slipped on my robe, my footsteps unhurried, and pulled the door open. There stood Jason, disheveled, wild-eyed, and breathing as though he had just sprinted a marathon in a panic. He was still wearing yesterday’s rumpled shirt, his hair standing up in chaotic tufts.

“What... what did you do?” Jason choked out, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and blind rage. He shoved past me into the foyer, not even waiting for an invitation. “My mother called me ten minutes ago. She’s sitting in the lobby of my apartment building with fifteen suitcases and Chloe, screaming at the front desk because the keycode wouldn’t work, and the building manager threatened to call the police!”

I leaned against the doorframe, crossing my arms over my chest, letting a cool, detached smile touch my lips. “Your mother said she and Chloe were moving in permanently, Jason. I simply helped them find a home worthy of their high standards. Isn’t that what a dutiful daughter-in-law does?”

“You gave them the address to her place!” Jason hissed, taking a step toward me, his face flushing a deep, furious crimson. “You knew Mia was there! You knew what kind of situation—!”

“A situation you created?” I cut him off, my voice dropping an octave into absolute ice. The amusement vanished from my face, replaced by a terrifying stillness. “You built that bed, Jason. Now your mother and sister are lying in it. Literally.”

Before he could process the sheer weight of my words, his phone buzzed in his hand. The screen flashed Barbara. He stared at it as if it were a venomous snake before slowly pressing accept, his hands trembling violently.

“Mom, listen to me, let me explain—” Jason stammered.

Barbara’s shriek pierced the silence of the room so loudly I could hear it from three feet away. “Explain what, you ungrateful, lying bastard?! There is a half-naked Instagram model locked in this bedroom screaming at us in a bathrobe, your sister is crying in the hallway, and your clothes are scattered all over the floor! Who the hell is Mia?!”

The call disconnected with a sharp click. Jason lowered his phone slowly, color draining entirely from his face. He looked at me not with anger anymore, but with the hollow, creeping realization of a man who had just signed his own death warrant.

“You’re finished, Jason,” I whispered softly, turning my back on him to walk into the kitchen. “And the best part? You haven’t even checked your bank accounts yet.”
