Chapter 7 - THE FALL OF THE EMPIRE

Over the next forty-eight hours, I didn't sleep.
While Lily rested safely in a private federal medical facility under 24-hour armed guard by my personal team, I went to work. Not as a grieving wife. As an operative on a scorched-earth mission.
Using the document Lily had hidden, I worked alongside federal prosecutors to dismantle every single asset linked to Grant Carlisle, Vanessa Vale, and her father's defense firm.
By Tuesday morning:
The Vale family’s defense firm was raided by the FBI, its stock crashing to zero in hours.
Richard Vale was formally stripped of his clearances and locked in maximum-security isolation.
Vanessa Vale was charged as an accessory to murder and high treason, facing forty years without parole.
And then came Grant.
I arranged a private meeting in the interrogation room at the federal holding facility.
When Grant was led into the room in orange scrubs, hand-cuffed and ankle-chained, he looked twenty years older. His sleek hair was messy, his posture broken.
He looked at me with desperate, hollow eyes as he sat down across the steel table.
"Evelyn... please," he begged, his voice raspy. "You have to help me. The cartel... they found out the money was seized by the government. They put a hit out on me inside this prison! I won't survive a week in here!"
I sat back comfortably in my chair, folding my arms. "I know, Grant."
"You have to transfer me to protective custody!" he wept, leaning over the table. "I'll give you everything! I'll sign the divorce papers! I'll waive all rights to Lily! Just save my life!"
I pulled a thick stack of legal documents out of my briefcase and slid them across the table toward him.
"You don't have any rights to waive, Grant," I said calmly. "Yesterday, a judge legally terminated your parental rights based on the surveillance video of you pushing my mother and Vanessa abusing Lily."
Grant’s hands shook as he looked at the papers. "What is this?"
"This is the total liquidation of Carlisle Logistics," I explained with a cold smile. "I bought your company yesterday at an asset auction for one dollar. I renamed it the Eleanor Vance Memorial Foundation—a non-profit dedicated to protecting children of domestic abuse."
Grant stared at me, dumbfounded. "You... you took my company?"
"I took your company, your house, your cars, your offshore accounts, and your name," I continued, leaning forward until I was inches from his face. "You are completely bankrupt, Grant. You don't even own the clothes on your back. The state of Colorado owns you now."
"Evelyn, please! They're going to kill me in here!" he sobbed, tears spilling down his face onto the steel table.
"You should have thought about that before you put your hands on my mother," I whispered. "And before you let that woman put her heel on my daughter."
I stood up, adjusting my jacket, and walked toward the heavy steel door.
May you like
"Evelyn! Don't leave me! EVELYN!" Grant screamed, slamming his cuffed hands against the table as the guards grabbed him.
I walked out without looking back once.
