Chapter 10 - The Ultimate StandBefore I could answer, every single light in the house flickered and died.

Total, pitch-black darkness enveloped the rooms, broken only by the pale, eerie glow of the streetlamps outside through the rain-streaked windows.
"Mommy?" Lily cried out from the dining room, her voice trembling with sudden terror.
"Stay under the table, baby! Don't move, no matter what you hear!" I shouted back, switching my sidearm's tactical flashlight on with a sharp click.
"They're here," Marcus hissed, pulling a suppressed pistol from beneath his trench coat. "They bypassed the neighborhood grid. Standard tactical entry protocol."
Heavy boots slammed against the front door, splintering the deadbolts in a single, coordinated concussion grenade blast. The front door blew inward, showering the marble foyer with splinters of wood and white dust.
Three masked figures clad in heavy tactical gear swarmed through the smoke, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the hallway with infrared laser sights.
"Marcus, cover the stairs!" I yelled, dropping into a classic combat squat behind the heavy mahogany dining table where Lily was huddled.
The first intruder rounded the corner, his weapon tracking toward the dining area. I didn't hesitate. Years of muscle memory took over; I squeezed the trigger twice, center mass. The operative dropped instantly, his rifle clattering against the floor.
"Evelyn! Up top!" Marcus shouted from the stairwell.
Two more figures dropped from the open second-story balcony, rappelling down ropes directly into the living room, heading straight for the master suite stairs—straight toward the hidden vault.
"Oh no you don't," I muttered.
I vaulted over the dining table, sliding across the polished floor directly into the path of the descending intruders. With a swift, brutal sweep of my boot, I took out the lead operative's legs, sending him crashing hard into the marble pillars. The second operative raised his rifle, but Marcus appeared from the shadows, striking the barrel aside with the butt of his pistol and subduing him with a swift chokehold.
Within forty seconds, the foyer fell silent, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of Marcus and myself.
I stood over the downed operative nearest to me, ripped the tactical mask from his face, and froze.
It wasn't a cartel mercenary. It was one of the senior federal marshals who had served the eviction notice to Grant three weeks ago—a man wearing a hidden communication earpiece linked directly to the federal justice department's internal security wing.
"They're everywhere, Evelyn," Marcus panted, wiping blood from a minor graze on his forehead. "The corruption goes all the way to the top of the agency. They didn't just want the files—they wanted you neutralized so no one would ever know."
I stood up slowly, looking back toward the dining room where Lily was peeking out from beneath the table, her big brown eyes wide with fear, but safe.
A cold, fierce fury ignited deep within my chest—a fire hotter and more dangerous than anything I had ever felt in the field. They thought I was a retired domestic housewife. They thought my story ended with a ruined marriage and a locked prison cell.
They had no idea that I was just getting started.
I turned to Marcus, my voice hard as diamonds. "Get Lily out the back. Take her to the safehouse in Vermont. Make sure she’s protected."
"What about you?" Marcus asked, his eyes wide. "If you stay, they won't stop coming."

I racked the slide of my pistol, a deadly, confident smile touching my lips as I looked out into the stormy night where a fleet of unmarked black SUVs was beginning to turn down our street.
"Let them come," I said softly. "I'm going to finish the mission."
