Chapter 4 - The Dinner Party TrapThree days later, the storm broke in broad daylight.

Grant, desperate to salvage his social standing and convinced he could manipulate me into a quiet settlement, made a fatal miscalculation. He assumed that because I was a federal agent bound by red tape, I wouldn't fight dirty in public.
He hosted a high-profile charity gala at the city's most exclusive hotel—an event where prominent business leaders, local politicians, and media moguls gathered to rub shoulders. Grant, wearing a borrowed tuxedo and a desperate smile, planned to use the platform to announce his new corporate venture and paint himself as a victim of a "bitter, unstable government agent wife."
I decided to RSVP.
When I walked into the grand ballroom, the chatter died down instantly. I wasn't wearing an evening gown. I wore my full tactical dress uniform—crisp, pressed, adorned with the commendations and medals I had earned during my years in the field. My hair was pulled back into a severe, flawless bun; my boots clicked against the polished marble with rhythmic authority.
Grant spotted me near the entrance, his face turning the color of curdled milk. He dropped the glass of champagne he was holding, and it shattered against the floor, mirroring the exact scene from my living room a few nights prior.
"Evelyn," he hissed, hurrying over through the frozen crowd, his voice trembling. "What are you doing here? This is a private corporate event. You can't just—"
"Watch me," I said, stepping past him onto the raised dais where the microphone stood live and waiting.
Vanessa, standing near the VIP table in a glittering emerald dress, sneered from across the room. "Look, the rent-a-cop is here to make a scene because she can't afford a ticket," she called out loudly, trying to rally the nervous laughter of the crowd.
I didn't blink. I walked up to the podium, tapped the microphone once, and the heavy acoustic feedback echoed through the hall, silencing every whisper.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice carrying clear, calm, and lethal across the room. "Before Mr. Carlisle pitches his wonderful new investment fund to you tonight, I think it’s only fair that you see the actual audit report of where your capital—and my family's assets—are truly going."
With a single tap on my secure tablet linked to the ballroom’s main projector screen, the entire wall behind the dais lit up.

The first image displayed was not a corporate growth chart. It was the detailed ledger of embezzled funds, followed by the secret custody petition, and finally, high-resolution security camera footage from my home showing Vanessa wiping her stiletto heel on my five-year-old daughter's hand.
The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos.
