Chapter 7 - The Final AssetWith Grant behind bars awaiting trial and Vanessa facing multiple felony counts for financial conspiracy and child abuse, the legal dust finally began to settle.

The courts swiftly restored full, unencumbered custody of Lily to me, alongside complete ownership of all personal and corporate assets. But winning the legal battle was only half the victory; the real work was healing the little girl sitting quietly on the living room rug.
Two weeks after the gala, the house felt different. The oppressive, cold atmosphere engineered by Grant and his mistress was gone. The dark, heavy drapes had been replaced with crisp white linens that let the morning sunlight pour across the marble floor.
I sat on the rug next to Lily, who was carefully coloring a picture with a brand-new box of crayons. Her hair was tied back with bright yellow butterfly clips—the exact ones she had worn the day I left for Denver.
"Mommy?" she whispered, her voice still a little tentative, though the heavy, terrified silence was slowly fading away.
"Yes, sweetheart?" I answered softly, setting down my paperwork.
"Are you going away again?"
Her small brown eyes looked up at me with a vulnerability that pierced straight through my chest.
I reached out, gently taking her small hand in mine—the exact hand that had been stepped on by a cruel, selfish woman just weeks ago—and kissed her knuckles.
"Never again, Lily," I promised, my voice steady and absolute. "My operational days are officially over. I requested a permanent desk assignment at headquarters, right here in the city. No more border runs, no more hiding, and no more leaving."
A tiny, tentative smile bloomed across her face—the first real, unfiltered smile I had seen in months.

"Can we make pink cupcakes today?" she asked.
"The exact ones you wanted," I smiled, pulling her into a warm, fierce hug. "With extra sprinkles."
