Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the EmpireFlashes from smartphone cameras lit up the dark ballroom like a lightning storm. Prominent investors who had been sipping Grant’s champagne moments ago backed away as if he carried a contagious disease.

Grant rushed toward the stage, his face contorted in sheer panic, waving his arms wildly. "Turn that off! It’s fake! She hacked the projector! It’s all malicious lies fabricated by a vengeful wife!"
"Lies?" a cold, authoritative voice rang out from the back of the room.
District Attorney Miller, accompanied by two financial crimes investigators, walked through the parting crowd. He looked directly at Grant, holding up a thick manila folder stamped with a federal grand jury seal.
"Mr. Carlisle, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, tax evasion, and the illegal concealment of marital assets. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Grant froze mid-stride, his arms dropping to his sides. The illusion of his power, his wealth, and his untouchable social status evaporated in less than thirty seconds. He looked around the room, desperately searching for a friendly face, but every single person—including his closest business partners—turned their backs on him.
Vanessa tried to slip out through the side service exit, moving quietly toward the heavy velvet curtains.
"Stop right there, Miss Vale," I called out into the microphone.
She froze, her manicured hands gripping her handbag so tightly her knuckles turned white.
"Don't worry," I added smoothly, stepping down from the stage and walking toward her with measured steps. "You won't be left out of the festivities. Federal investigators would love to speak with you regarding your direct involvement in concealing stolen assets and accessory to child endangerment."
Vanessa spun around, her face twisted in pure venom. "You think you've won, don't you? You think you're some kind of hero! You're just a cold, heartless machine who drove her own family away!"

I stopped two feet in front of her, looking down into her panicked, empty eyes.
"I didn't drive my family away, Vanessa," I said quietly, letting the weight of my words sink into her soul. "I just cleaned house. And trust me—the sweeping is only just beginning."
