Chapter 10 - Unmasked

Sirens blared in the distance, their red and blue lights flashing through the trees at the end of the long driveway. The FBI was converging on the Blackwood Estate.

Julian led Anaëlle down the grand marble steps—the very steps she had descended hours ago in her red dress and stilettos. They reached the quiet sanctuary of the gardens, far from the chaotic screams echoing inside the mansion.

"It’s over," Julian said gently. His hands reached up to her face. "You can take it off now."

Anaëlle’s fingers trembled as she reached up and untied the knot at the back of her head. The black silk slipped away, falling onto the damp grass.

She blinked against the cool moonlight, her eyes adjusting to the dim night. She slowly raised her gaze to look at the man who had terrified, protected, and saved her.

He was tall, with sharp, striking features, dark hair, and intense grey eyes framed by subtle scars along his jawline. But as she stared into those eyes, her heart stopped.

On his right pinky finger sat a tarnished silver ring—a ring carved with the crest of a phoenix.

Anaëlle gasped, grabbing his hand. "That ring... that belonged to my father."

Julian’s cold demeanor melted away, replaced by an expression of profound, aching sorrow. Tears welled in his grey eyes.

"Your father gave it to me ten years ago," Julian whispered, his voice cracking. "The night he and your mother were ambushed by Vance. I was just an eighteen-year-old street kid your father took in as an apprentice. When the attack happened, your mother locked the ledger in the piano and told me to run. Your father gave me this ring and made me swear one thing."

"What?" Anaëlle sobbed, clutching his hand to her chest.

"He made me swear that I would protect you and Clara from the shadows," Julian said softly. "I took a fake identity, infiltrated Vance’s syndicate, and spent ten long years climbing their ranks just to get close enough to destroy them and retrieve your mother’s legacy."

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a certified cashier's check, pressing it into her hands.

"This is from your mother's private offshore account, unlocked alongside the ledger," Julian said, smiling through his tears. "One million dollars. Clara gets her treatment, Anaëlle. She's going to live."

Anaëlle looked at the check, then up at the man who had sacrificed his entire youth to fulfill a promise to a dead man. She stepped forward, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck, burying her face into his chest—inhaling the comforting scent of amber and vetiver that she no longer feared.

"Thank you," she sobbed into his shoulder. "Thank you, Julian."

As the police cars swarmed the estate behind them, flashing red and blue against the night sky, Julian wrapped his arms around her, holding her close under the bright, clear moonlight. The dark symphony was finally over, and for the first time in ten years, Anaëlle could hear the sweet sound of freedom.
