Chapter 3 - The Mechanical Click

Anaëlle’s fingers moved over the keys as if possessed by an independent intelligence. The haunting lullaby filled the grand room, echoing off the high ceilings and marble walls. She played with a raw, aching passion, chasing the memory of her late mother, who had vanished ten years ago without a trace.

She reached the climax of the piece—a sequence of seven descending notes in C-sharp minor.

Clack.

It wasn't a piano note. It was a sharp, mechanical metallic click originating from deep within the body of the Steinway, right beneath the soundboard.

Anaëlle froze, her hands stopping mid-air. "What was that?"

He didn't answer immediately. She heard him lean over the piano frame, the rustle of his tailored suit jacket whispering in the quiet room.

"You played the final cadence with an A-natural," he said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Why?"

"Because... because that’s how my mother sang it," she stammered, pulling her hands back toward her chest. "It was her variation. She said the standard score was missing the heart of the song."

"It wasn't missing the heart, Anaëlle," he whispered, standing directly beside her now. "It was missing the key."

She felt his hand hover near her cheek, close enough that she could feel the heat, but he did not touch her.

"Your mother didn't just sing you a lullaby," he continued, every word weighed down by a dark, dangerous secret. "She left you an acoustic combination. And tonight, you just unlocked the first tumbler of the vault."
