Chapter 2 - The Whispered Symphony

Night two began in total silence.
When the iron gates of the Blackwood Estate swung open automatically at 8:45 p.m., Anaëlle didn't hesitate. She walked up the stone steps, entered the unlocked foyer, and sat at the grand Steinway. Before the gilded clock could strike nine, she tied the black silk blindfold over her eyes herself.
She was learning the rules of his game.
Precisely at nine, the familiar scent of amber and vetiver filled the air. His heavy, deliberate footsteps stopped behind her.
"You are punctual," he remarked. "And obedient."
"I need the money," Anaëlle replied plainly, resting her hands on the cold ivory keys. "Are we continuing with Chopin?"
"No," he said softly. "Tonight, you play something else. A piece that is not in any standard repertoire. I am going to hum a melody, Anaëlle. I want you to translate it to the keys, flawlessly, on the first attempt."
She frowned under the silk mask. "That’s impossible. Without sheet music or rehearsal—"
"Five thousand dollars for a perfect translation," he interrupted. "One thousand deducted for every error."
Before she could protest, he leaned down. His lips were so close to her ear she could feel the subtle heat radiating from his skin. He began to hum—a haunting, melancholic lullaby in a minor key. The melody was strangely complex, woven with intricate chromatic shifts that defied conventional musical theory.
Yet, as the notes vibrated through his chest, something strange stirred deep within Anaëlle’s memory. Her chest tightened. A ghost of a memory—a dimly lit room, the scent of lavender, and a woman’s voice singing that exact same tune—flashed across her mind.
"I know this song," she breathed, her voice trembling. "My mother used to sing this to me when I was a child."

The air in the room suddenly turned freezing cold. The man’s breath caught in his throat.
"Play it," he ordered, his voice suddenly sharp, carrying an edge of desperation he hadn't shown before. "Play it now!"
