Chapter 10 - Shadows into Light

Three months later.
The burnt ruins of the Lake Forest estate had been completely cleared, replaced by a state-of-the-art modern sanctuary surrounded by impenetrable security.
Tylerâs heart surgery was a complete success. He was now recovering in a private rehabilitation resort in Miami, fully funded by the Vale foundation, with a full team of doctors monitoring his health.
I stood on the glass balcony of the new Vale estate, watching the sunset over Lake Michigan.
Behind me, soft footsteps approached.
Noah ran out onto the balcony, laughing happily, holding a brand new wooden toy train. He didn't scream anymore. He didn't bite. He was a bright, happy four-year-old boy whose eyes were finally free of terror.
âClara! Look! Daddy built this for me!â Noah beamed, showing off the toy.
âItâs beautiful, Noah,â I smiled, kneeling down to kiss his cheek.
âGo wash your hands for dinner, buddy,â Dominicâs voice called out from the doorway.
Noah happily ran inside, shouting for Maria.
Dominic walked out onto the balcony, wearing a relaxed black cashmere sweater. He stepped behind me, wrapping his arms gently around my waist, pulling me back against his broad chest.
I rested my head against his shoulder, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart.
After Morettiâs faction was wiped out, Lydia had been placed in a specialized recovery facility in Switzerland. Before she left, she had signed the divorce papers, admitting that she couldn't live in Dominicâs dark world anymoreâa world that I had stepped into without fear to save her son.
âWhat are you thinking about?â Dominic whispered, his lips softly brushing against my neck.
âIâm thinking about the day I walked into your house with twenty dollars in my pocket and a broken spirit,â I admitted softly.
Dominic smiledâa rare, genuine smile that transformed his harsh, handsome face. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a velvet box, opening it to reveal a massive, flawless canary diamond ring.
âYou came into my house as a cleaner, Clara,â Dominic said, turning me around to face him, looking into my eyes with deep, unshakeable devotion. âNow, you run my life. You hold my sonâs heart. And if youâll let me... I want you to hold mine forever.â
I looked at the ring, then up into the eyes of the man Chicago feared, but whom I knew as the man who would burn the world to protect the people he loved.
âIs that a command, Mr. Vale?â I asked, a playful smirk touching my lips.
Dominic chuckled softly, slipping the ring onto my finger.
âItâs a plea, Clara. Say yes.â

I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him down into a passionate kiss as the Chicago sky turned to gold.
