Chapter 7 - The Ambush at Lake Forest

The second Hargrove’s focus shifted to Dominic’s lowering weapon, I didn't hesitate.

Ignoring the agonizing scream of my broken ribs, I threw my entire body forward, lunging across the metal desk and slamming my heavy steel cleaning flashlight into Hargrove’s wrist.

CRACK!

Hargrove shrieked in pain as the syringe flew from her hand, shattering against the concrete wall.

Before she could recover, Dominic moved like a shadow. He closed the distance in half a second, grabbing Hargrove by the throat and slamming her back onto the surveillance console, smashing two glass screens.

“Noah!” I yelled, pulling the little boy out of the chair and shielding him with my body as Dominic subdued the woman.

Noah threw his arms around my neck, burying his face in my shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably. “Clara! Clara!”

“I’ve got you, baby. I’ve got you,” I whispered, kissing the top of his head, holding him tight against my vest.

Suddenly, the red emergency lights on the ceiling began to flash violently. A loud klaxon alarm echoed through the underground bunker.

BOOM!

A massive explosion rocked the foundation overhead. Dust and concrete rained down from the ceiling.

On the surviving monitors, we saw three black armored vans smashing through the front wrought-iron gates of the estate. Dozens of heavily armed men in tactical gear poured out, opening fire on Dominic’s remaining house guards.

“Moretti’s private army,” Dominic growled, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto Hargrove’s wrists and locking her to a steam pipe. “They’re burning the house down to cover their tracks!”

“What about Lydia?!” I shouted over the sound of gunfire echoing from the floor above.

Dominic grabbed a heavy assault rifle from a weapon rack mounted on the wall. His face was cold, merciless stone.

“Stay behind me,” Dominic ordered. “We’re getting my family out of here.”
