Chapter 22 - The Bloodline Secret

The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

“My father... was an accountant,” I stammered, staring down at the silver-caned man in the courtyard.

“He was my chief financial strategist,” Vance corrected, ascending the marble stairs with steady, quiet authority. His guards raised their silenced submachine guns, pinning Dominic and me against the glass railing. “Fifteen years ago, when the Federal government attempted to seize the Syndicate’s global treasury, your father encrypted the entire reserve into a single biometric vault.”

Vance stopped at the top of the stairs, leaning heavily on his cane, his pale gray eyes assessing me like a piece of livestock.

“He died before he could hand over the decryption key,” Vance continued, a bitter smile touching his lips. “For fifteen years, the Global Board believed the key was lost. Until three months ago, when our medical intelligence team analyzed your brother Tyler’s DNA during his heart transplant procedure.”

My blood ran completely cold. “Tyler...?”

“The key wasn’t a password, Clara,” Dominic spoke up, his body shifting subtly to shield me from Vance’s guards. “Your father embedded the digital encryption key into his children’s unique genetic code. It’s stored in the non-coding DNA sequences of you and your brother.”

“Precisely,” Vance smiled. “Dominic discovered this two weeks before your wedding in Chicago. That is why he burned his own empire, Clara. Not to escape Lydia. Not to escape the FBI. He burned Chicago to erase your family’s medical records from the federal database before I could find you.”

I turned to look at Dominic, my chest heavy with overwhelming emotion. Everything he had done—the explosions, the surrender to Prosecutor Miller, the exile to Italy—wasn't just about survival. He had thrown away his entire life’s work to hide my brother and me from this monster.

“And now you’ve found us,” Dominic said, his hand slowly sliding into his jacket pocket.

“I have,” Vance replied smoothly. “And you have two choices, Dominic. You take command of the European Syndicate as my right hand, and hand Clara over to our medical facility in Geneva to extract the key... or I kill your son upstairs right now.”
