Chapter 2 - The Silent War in ICU

"The DNA Test That Shattered His Bloodline"The private delivery wing of New York-Presbyterian was on total lockdown. Four armed Whitmore security guards stood at the entrance of the delivery suite, turning away anyone without high-level clearance.
Inside, the room was a blur of machines, shouting nurses, and glaring surgical lights.
"Push, Lena! Push!" the doctor ordered.
"I can't!" I wept, my knuckles white as I gripped Adrian’s hand. He hadn't left my side for a single second. Blood stained his white shirt sleeves; his hair was a messy ruin, yet his grip on my hand was ironclad.
"You can, sweetheart. Look at me," Adrian commanded, leaning down until his eyes forced mine to lock with his. "Look at me, Lena. You are the strongest woman I’ve ever known. You survived eight months without my protection. You can do this. Bring our baby into this world."
With a final, desperate scream, I gave everything I had left.
The sound that followed shattered the heavy tension in the room: a sharp, loud, beautiful cry.
"It's a boy!" the nurse announced, wrapping the squirming infant in a warm blanket.
Tears streamed down Adrian's face—a man I had never seen shed a single tear in five years of marriage. He took the tiny bundle into his massive arms, his chin trembling as he looked down at our son.
"He's perfect," Adrian whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "He looks just like..."
The heavy wooden doors of the delivery room burst open.
"He doesn't look like a Whitmore at all," a cruel, refined voice rang out.
Victoria Whitmore, Adrian’s mother, stepped into the room. Dressed in Chanel tweed, her face was a mask of cold arrogance. Behind her walked two men in dark suits carrying steel briefcase cases.
"Mother, get the hell out of here," Adrian growled without turning around, his protective instincts flaring instantly.
"I won't let a bastard inherit the Whitmore empire, Adrian," Victoria declared coldly. She gestured to the men behind her. "This woman disappeared for eight months into the lower-class slums of Brooklyn. Do you really believe she was faithful to you?"
"Shut your mouth!" Adrian yelled, rising to his full height, holding our crying baby securely against his chest.
"I brought court-ordered swab kits," Victoria said, holding up a sealed medical envelope. "If that child is yours, prove it. Otherwise, Henderson has the updated annulment papers ready outside. She gets nothing, and the baby goes to an agency."
"You touch my family, and I will tear down everything grandfather built," Adrian warned, his eyes lethal.
"Adrian..." I choked out from the hospital bed, weak and terrified. "Let them take the test."
Adrian turned to me, horrified. "Lena, no. I don't need a test to know—"
"Let them take it," I repeated, staring directly into Victoria’s cold eyes. "Because when it comes back positive, I want your mother stripped of every board title she holds."
Victoria sneered. "Deal. swab the child."

Ten minutes later, the swabs were sealed in tamper-proof bags and taken to the lab under double guard. But as Victoria stepped into the hallway, I saw her slide a small gold envelope into the coat pocket of the lab director.
My blood ran ice cold. She wasn't trying to prove the baby wasn't Adrian's. She was going to fake the results.
