Chapter 4 - Secrets Beneath the Bloodline

"The Safehouse Burning in the Hamptons"The room went completely, dead quiet. The gentle beep of the heart monitor was the only sound separating us.

Adrian stared at me as if I had spoken in a foreign language. "My father's letter? Lena... what are you talking about? My father died twelve years ago."

"I found it night before I left," I wept, the memory washing over me like ice water. "It was in the hidden floor safe in your study. A signed confession from Marcus Whitmore... stating that the car crash that killed my parents twenty years ago wasn't an accident. It was a hit ordered by the Whitmore family to take their tech patents!"

Adrian stood up slowly, looking lost. "Lena... I didn't even know your parents. You told me they died in a highway accident when you were ten!"

"Because I didn't know the truth until I opened that safe!" I cried out. "And right next to the confession was a payment transfer of five million dollars signed by you three years ago to the driver who hit them!"

Adrian's jaw dropped. "That payment wasn't a hit fee! That payment was—"

Before he could finish his sentence, the emergency lights in the hospital room flashed red. A loud, piercing fire alarm shattered the silence.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

"Attention all personnel," the automated loudspeaker chimed. "Fire detected on Floor 4. Evacuate immediately."

Adrian’s instincts kicked in instantly. He reached for the bassinet, pulling our baby into his arms, and slammed the lock on our room door.

"Adrian, what's happening?" I panicked, pulling the IV tubes from my arm.

"The main fire suppression system just got cut from the outside," Adrian said, checking his encrypted phone. "This isn't a fire. It's a breach."

Suddenly, the power cut completely. The room plunged into pitch darkness, illuminated only by the faint red glow of the emergency exit signs outside.

THUD. THUD. THUD.

Heavy footsteps approached our door. Then, the door handle began to turn slowly.

Adrian pulled a compact 9mm pistol from an ankle holster beneath his trousers—a side of him he had kept hidden from me during our entire marriage. He shoved me behind his back, aiming the weapon directly at the door frame.

"Adrian Whitmore!" a voice called from the hallway, muffled through a tactical gas mask. "Hand over the Carter girl and the baby, and we leave you alive!"

"Who sent you?" Adrian yelled back, his voice steady as steel.

"Ask your dead father!" the voice laughed chillingly.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Bullets tore through the heavy wooden door, splintering wood everywhere. Adrian shoved me to the floor behind the heavy medical bed, shielding the baby with his own body as he fired three precise shots back through the door.

A body hit the floor outside.

"Lena, listen to me," Adrian whispered rapidly into my ear, his breath hot against my cheek. "There is a private service staircase behind the utility closet. You take the baby and run."

May you like

"No! I'm not leaving you!" I cried.

"They aren't here for the Whitmore fortune, Lena," Adrian said, his eyes burning with absolute clarity. "They're here to erase the Carter bloodline forever. Go!"
