Chapter 8 - The Unexpected Twist

"The Second Child in the Shadows"I shoved the phone toward Adrian. His face drained of all color in a fraction of a second.

Without saying a word to the stunned board members, Adrian grabbed my hand, and we sprinted toward the private elevator.

"Call the state police!" Adrian roared into his earpiece as the elevator doors slammed shut. "Get a SWAT team to the estate NOW!"

Twenty terrifying minutes later, Adrian’s sports car screeched to a halt outside our gated upstate mansion. We threw the front doors open, weapons drawn, rushing up the grand staircase toward the nursery.

Adrian kicked the nursery door open. "Victoria! Put it down!"

Victoria sat calmly in the rocking chair, sipping tea from a delicate porcelain cup. The silver flask sat unopened on the nightstand.

"You're late," she said softly, completely unbothered.

"Get away from him!" I screamed, lunging forward to grab my baby, wrapping him in my arms, checking his face frantically. He was completely fine, sleeping soundly.

"I didn't poison him, Lena," Victoria said, setting her teacup down with a light click. "I'm not a monster like Marcus."

"Then why are you here?!" Adrian growled, keeping his gun raised. "You're violating a restraining order! You're going to prison!"

Victoria looked at Adrian with a strange, tragic pity in her eyes.

"I came to tell you the final piece of the truth, Adrian. The piece Marcus took to his grave. The piece I was too terrified to tell you until today."

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a faded yellow birth certificate, tossing it onto the crib mattress.

Adrian frowned, picking up the paper. As his eyes read the names, his hand began to shake violently.

"What is it?" I asked, trembling.

"This... this is a birth certificate from twenty-four years ago," Adrian whispered, his voice barely audible. "A hospital in Chicago..."

"You aren't my biological son, Adrian," Victoria said quietly, tears finally welling in her cold eyes. "When Marcus found out I couldn't have children, he bought a child from a poor young couple in upstate New York to secure his corporate succession."

I stared at her, horrified. "What couple?"

Victoria looked directly at me.

"The Carters, Lena. Your parents."

The room spun violently around me. I felt like the floor had opened up beneath my feet.

"Adrian isn't a Whitmore," Victoria whispered. "He's your older brother."

Silence—absolute, terrifying silence—filled the room.

Adrian dropped the paper. He looked at me, horror and absolute heartbreak tearing through his blue eyes. The baby we had just brought into the world wiggled gently in my arms.

"No..." Adrian choked out, taking a step back. "No... that's impossible. We... we have a child together!"

Victoria stood up, holding out a sealed envelope. "Open it."

Adrian snatched the envelope, his hands trembling so badly he almost tore the paper inside. It was a secondary, deep-genomic sequencing report from the national registry.

As Adrian read the bold letters at the bottom, a sudden gasp escaped his throat.

"It's... it's a lie," Adrian breathed, looking up at Victoria, a wild, hysterical laughter suddenly bubbling out of his chest. "You twisted old witch!"

"What?" I begged, crying. "Adrian, what does it say?!"

Adrian grabbed the paper and shoved it in front of my face, tears of pure relief flooding his eyes.

"We aren't related!" Adrian shouted. "My real birth parents were named Carter, but they were a completely different family from Ohio—no relation to your family at all! She used the matching last name to try and mess with our heads so we'd forfeit the corporate vote!"

Victoria’s face went completely pale. "What? No... Marcus told me—"

"Marcus lied to you for twenty years just to keep you under his thumb!" Adrian yelled.

Sirens wailed in the driveway outside as six police cruisers pulled up, red and blue lights flashing through the nursery windows. Armed officers burst into the hallway, surrounding Victoria and placing her in handcuffs.

"Victoria Whitmore, you are under arrest for extortion, trespassing, and fraud," the lead officer declared, dragging her out of the room.

As the door closed behind them, the house finally fell completely silent.

The sun was setting over the Hudson River, casting a warm, golden glow through the nursery window.

Adrian walked over to me, wrapping his long, strong arms around both me and our baby boy. I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat—the heartbeat I had missed for eight long, terrifying months.

"It's over," Adrian whispered, kissing my lips softly, deeply, with all the love and longing he had saved for nearly a year. "The secrets, the lies, the war... it's all over."

"So..." I smiled through my tears, looking down at our sleeping son. "What do we do now, Mr. Whitmore?"

May you like

Adrian smiled, resting his chin on my head.

"First, we destroy those divorce papers," he whispered softly. "And then... we build a real family."
