😨 CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Olivia Had Been Hiding

For the first time in years, the Carter house was quiet.

No arguments.

No complaints.

No endless demands from Ethan's family.

Only the soft hum of the air conditioner and the sound of rain tapping against the windows.

Olivia should have felt relieved.

Instead...

She couldn't stop crying.

Ethan found her sitting alone in the nursery, holding a tiny blue baby blanket against her face.

"Liv?"

She quickly wiped away her tears.

"I'm okay."

He knelt beside her.

"No, you're not."

For several seconds she said nothing.

Then she quietly reached into the drawer beside the crib.

Inside was a thick stack of folded papers.

Medical reports.

Hospital bills.

Ultrasound notes.

And one envelope Ethan had never seen before.

He opened it.

The date made his heart stop.

It had been written almost four months earlier.

"Why didn't you show me this?"

Olivia looked down.

"Because your mother found it first."

Ethan froze.

"What do you mean?"

"The doctor said my blood pressure was dangerously high because of stress. He warned that if things didn't improve, our baby could come early."

She swallowed hard.

"Your mom took the letter before you got home."

Ethan stared at her.

"I never saw it."

"I know."

Tears rolled down Olivia's face.

"She told me if I gave it to you, you'd stop helping your family... and they'd blame me forever."

Ethan's hands began shaking.

"She hid this from me?"

Olivia nodded.

"And she promised everything would get better."

"It never did."

Ethan slowly closed his eyes.

For months...

His own mother had hidden medical warnings about his wife and unborn son.

That wasn't control anymore.

That was betrayal.

He pulled Olivia into his arms.

"No one will ever silence you again."

Just then, Ethan's phone rang.

The caller ID read:

May you like

Frisco Medical Center.

His smile disappeared instantly.
