⚖️ CHAPTER 7 — The Truth Diane Could Never Bury

The flashing red and blue lights reflected across Diane Carter's face as she stood frozen in her driveway.
Two police officers approached calmly.
"Mrs. Carter?"
She forced a nervous smile.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
One officer held up a printed security photo.
It clearly showed Diane opening Ethan's safe.
Removing the documents.
Leaving the house with the folder tucked beneath her arm.
"We've received a report of unlawful entry and removal of personal property."
"I had a key," Diane protested.
"My son gave it to me."
The officer nodded.
"A key doesn't authorize taking someone else's property."
Her confidence cracked.
Meanwhile, Ethan sat beside Olivia's hospital bed, holding her hand while their unborn son's heartbeat echoed steadily through the monitor.
His phone vibrated.
The detective spoke first.
"Mr. Carter, we've recovered the folder."
Ethan let out a slow breath.
"Thank you."
"However..."
"There was something else inside the vehicle."
"What do you mean?"
"A sealed envelope addressed to you."
"I've never seen it before."
Curious, Ethan agreed to meet the detective later that afternoon.
Hours later, he sat inside the detective's office.
The envelope looked old.
Yellowed with age.
Across the front, written in elegant handwriting, were just six words:
'For Ethan... when he finally learns the truth.'
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Diane.
From his late father.
Ethan's eyes widened.
His father had died fifteen years earlier.
Why had no one ever mentioned this letter?
He began reading.
My son... if this letter has reached you, then I fear your mother has become the person I always prayed she wouldn't.
His heart pounded.
There is something you were never told.
This house was never the greatest gift our family received.
You were.
Ethan frowned.
The next sentence stole the air from his lungs.
Diane is not your biological mother.
The room blurred.
He read the line again.
Then again.
Impossible.
His hands shook uncontrollably.
The letter continued.
When you were only three years old, your birth mother died in a car accident. Diane married me two years later and agreed to raise you as her own. I believed she loved you.
I was wrong.
Tears welled in Ethan's eyes.
His father had hidden the truth to protect him.
But he had also left one final warning.
If Diane ever begins valuing control more than love... protect your own family before trying to save ours.
Ethan slowly lowered the letter.
Every memory from his childhood suddenly felt different.
The favoritism.
The criticism.
The impossible expectations.
The endless guilt.
It all made sense now.
He wasn't imagining it.
He had spent his entire life trying to earn affection that had never truly existed.
Just then, his phone rang again.
The caller ID read:
Olivia ❤️
He answered immediately.
Her voice was shaking.
"Ethan..."
"The baby's coming."
"But... I'm only thirty-five weeks."
Without another word, Ethan ran out of the detective's office.
As he sped toward the hospital, one terrifying thought echoed through his mind.
