Chapter 1 - The Knock at the DoorThe sudden, violent pounding against the heavy oak front door rattled the glass panels, sending a sharp vibration through the marble foyer.

Richard froze. The whiskey glass in his hand trembled, ice clinking against the crystal as the color drained entirely from his face. Rebecca gasped, clutching her silk robe tighter around her neck, her condescending smile vanishing into a mask of pure panic.
"Jacob... what did you do?" Richard’s voice dropped an octave, stripped of its previous arrogance.
Jacob didn't answer right away. He calmly knelt beside Emily on the sofa, wrapping a second heavy wool blanket around her shivering shoulders. Sophie’s cries had softened into a trembling whimper, her little cheeks beginning to flush pink again as warmth slowly returned to her skin. Jacob kissed his daughter’s forehead, his touch as gentle as silk—a stark contrast to the lethal stillness in his eyes when he finally turned back to his parents.
"I didn't do anything, Dad," Jacob said softly, his voice chillingly level. "You did this to yourself."
The pounding sounded again, accompanied by a booming voice that echoed off the high ceilings:
"FEDERAL AGENTS! OPEN THE DOOR IMMEDIATELY!"
Rebecca stumbled back a step. "Federal? Richard, what is he talking about? You said the military wouldn't look into the trust fund!"
"Shut up, Rebecca!" Richard spat, his breathing ragged. He glared at Jacob. "You think you can bring the authorities into my house? I built this empire! Everything in this house—the deed, the bank accounts, the investments—it's all in my name now. You signed the power of attorney before you deployed!"
Jacob slowly stood up, reaching into his duffel bag and pulling out a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax.
"I signed a military power of attorney for emergency medical care and temporary financial management, Dad," Jacob said, stepping toward his father. "Not a deed transfer. And certainly not authorization for you to siphon four million dollars out of my combat hazard pay, my late grandfather's trust, and Emily’s medical inheritance."

"You have no proof!" Richard snarled, stepping toward the door to lock it.
Before his hand could touch the brass deadbolt, the door burst open with a deafening crash.
