Chapter 2 - The Raid and the RescueFour heavily armed federal agents clad in tactical gear surged into the foyer, weapons lowered but ready, followed by two uniformed officers from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department and two paramedics pushing a stretcher.

"FBI! Nobody move!" shouted Lead Agent Marcus Vance, his eyes sweeping the room before instantly locking onto Jacob. Vance lowered his weapon and offered a crisp, formal nod. "Captain Miller. We received your signal."

"Paramedics, over here!" Jacob commanded, ignoring his parents completely as he guided the medics toward the couch. "My wife and four-month-old daughter have been exposed to sub-zero temperatures for at least two hours. Check for hypothermia immediately."

The paramedics moved swiftly, swathing Emily and Sophie in thermal blankets and checking their vital signs. Emily gripped Jacob's hand with desperate strength, her fingers icy.

"Jacob... don't let them take her..." she whimpered, her tears freezing on her pale cheeks.

"Nobody is taking anyone, sweetheart," Jacob whispered, kissing her knuckles. "You're safe. Sophie is safe. It's over."

Meanwhile, Agent Vance turned his attention to Richard and Rebecca.

"Richard Miller, Rebecca Miller," Vance announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, and attempted criminal negligence resulting in bodily harm."

"This is an outrage!" Rebecca shrieked, backing away into the living room. "Do you know who we are? My husband sits on the board of directors for Miller Global Logistics! This is our home!"

"Actually, Mrs. Miller," Vance replied coolly, unfolding a court document, "according to the emergency injunction issued by the Federal District Court thirty minutes ago, this property has been restored to the sole ownership of Captain Jacob Miller. You are currently trespassing."

Richard’s eyes darted toward the hallway leading to his private study. "Jacob, you traitorous bastard! After everything we gave you!"

"You gave me nothing," Jacob said, turning around slowly. "You waited until I was fighting in a war zone, trapped under mortar fire in Syria, to steal my life. You targeted Emily because she was alone, young, and caring for a newborn. You thought I would die over there, didn't you?"

Richard’s silence was answer enough.
