CHAPTER 10 — The Son No One Knew Existed

Arthur couldn't shake the feeling.
As the celebration ended and guests slowly disappeared into the evening, he kept glancing toward the empty street.
It felt as though someone had been watching him.
Someone familiar.
Someone he had forgotten.
Two weeks later...
A plain white envelope arrived at the Whitmore Foundation.
No return address.
Inside was a single photograph.
A younger Arthur.
Thirty years old.
Standing beside a smiling woman with auburn hair.
Between them...
A little boy no older than four.
On the back, only six handwritten words.
"You forgot the promise you made."
Arthur's hands began to tremble.
Emma noticed immediately.
"Grandpa..."
"Who is that little boy?"
Arthur closed his eyes.
"I prayed no one would ever find this photograph."
That evening...
Arthur gathered Richard, Grace, Emma, and Margaret in the foundation library.
He placed the picture on the table.
"There is something I never told anyone."
Silence filled the room.
"Long before I married Eleanor..."
"I loved another woman."
Her name was Rebecca Collins.
She was a schoolteacher.
Kind.
Honest.
The love of his life.
Arthur smiled sadly.
"We were engaged."
"But my father believed she was too poor to become part of the Whitmore family."
Richard stared at him.
"So what happened?"
Arthur looked away.
"My father offered Rebecca a choice."
"Leave me forever..."
"Or watch my family's business destroy her parents."
Rebecca disappeared without saying goodbye.
Arthur spent years believing...
She had simply stopped loving him.
Months later...
He met Eleanor.
Eventually...
He married her.
But he never knew...
Rebecca had already been carrying his child.
Three days after receiving the photograph...
A black SUV stopped outside the foundation.
The same one Arthur had noticed before.
A man stepped out.
He looked about thirty-five.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Gray eyes identical to Arthur's.
He walked calmly toward the entrance.
Emma was arranging books in the lobby.
"Can I help you?"
The man smiled politely.
"I'm looking for Arthur Whitmore."
Arthur stepped out of his office.
The moment their eyes met...
Time stopped.
Neither spoke.
Neither moved.
The stranger slowly removed an old silver pocket watch from his coat.
Arthur gasped.
It had belonged to Rebecca.
She had carried it everywhere.
"I've been searching for you..."
The man said quietly.
"My entire life."
Arthur's voice barely escaped.
"What... is your name?"
The stranger answered.
"Daniel Collins."
Then he reached into his briefcase.
He placed a worn leather journal on Arthur's desk.
"My mother asked me to give you this..."
"If I ever found you."
Arthur opened the first page.
It was Rebecca's handwriting.
Arthur, if you're reading this, I didn't leave because I stopped loving you. I left because your father threatened to destroy my family. I wanted to tell you about our son every single day... but I believed staying away was the only way to protect him. If fate ever brings Daniel back to you, don't waste another minute. Love him enough for both of us.
Tears rolled silently down Arthur's face.
He looked at Daniel.
"I'm so sorry."
Daniel shook his head.
"I didn't come here for an apology."
Arthur frowned.
"Then why did you come?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"Because yesterday..."
"My mother died."
"Her last words were..."
"'Go meet your father before it's too late.'"
Arthur crossed the room without another word.
For the first time in thirty-five years...
He embraced the son he never knew existed.
The room was silent except for quiet sobs.
Richard stepped forward.
He looked at Daniel.
"I spent most of my life hating our father because of lies."
He extended his hand.
"I don't want to lose another brother because of the past."
Daniel looked at the offered hand...
Then pulled Richard into a hug.
Emma laughed through her tears.
"So..."
"I have another uncle?"
Daniel smiled warmly.
"And I finally have a family."
Everyone believed the Whitmore story had finally reached its ending.
But as Margaret carefully turned the last page of Rebecca's journal...
A folded legal document slipped onto the floor.
She picked it up.
Her expression changed instantly.
"Arthur..."
His smile faded.
"What is it?"
Margaret slowly looked up.
"This isn't Rebecca's handwriting."
"It's your father's."
Arthur unfolded the yellowed document.
His heart nearly stopped.
Across the top, stamped in bold red letters, were the words:
CONFIDENTIAL ADOPTION AGREEMENT
Beneath it...
One sentence shattered everything they thought they finally understood.
"The child known as Daniel Collins is not the biological son of Arthur Whitmore."
Arthur slowly raised his eyes toward Daniel.
Daniel had already read the sentence.
His face had turned completely white.
Neither man knew what to say.
After thirty-five years of searching...
After finally finding each other...
May you like
One document had just destroyed the only truth they both believed.
