CHAPTER 10 — The Fire That Couldn't Burn the Truth

Red and blue emergency lights painted the Chicago skyline.

By the time Blake, Emma, Jonathan, and William reached the Harrington Energy Research Center, thick smoke poured from the east wing of the building.

Firefighters rushed through the entrance.

Police had already blocked off the surrounding streets.

Employees stood outside wrapped in emergency blankets, many of them still coughing from the smoke.

Blake pushed through the crowd.

"I'm Blake Harrington!"

A police captain recognized him immediately.

"Mr. Harrington, you need to stay behind the barrier."

"What happened?"

"We believe the explosion originated in the digital archives."

Blake's heart sank.

The archives.

Every legal contract.

Every financial record.

Every internal communication from the past twenty years.

Someone hadn't wanted to damage the building.

Someone wanted to erase history.

Emma scanned the faces of the employees.

"They evacuated everyone?"

The captain nodded.

"As far as we know."

"As far as you know?"

"We're still searching the lower level."

Before anyone could say another word, Blake's phone rang again.

It was Ethan, the oldest of the triplets, calling from Jonathan's estate using the house phone.

"Dad?"

Blake froze.

For a moment, the noise around him disappeared.

The little boy had never called him that before.

His voice softened.

"Hi, buddy."

"Grandpa Jonathan said you're helping people."

"I am."

"Please come home safe."

Blake closed his eyes.

"I promise I'll do everything I can."

The call lasted less than thirty seconds.

But it changed something inside him forever.

Emma had heard every word.

She quietly wiped away a tear before turning back toward the burning building.

A firefighter suddenly emerged carrying a fireproof metal case.

"I found this in the archive vault!"

The captain immediately secured it.

The case was badly scorched but still locked.

One investigator examined the identification plate.

His eyebrows shot upward.

"This vault belonged to the legal department."

Blake recognized the serial number.

"It contains the executive backup files."

Emma looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

"It means if the drives survived..."

"...every deleted email, every financial transfer, every board decision may still exist."

For the first time that night, hope flickered across their faces.

Across town...

Daniel Harrington stood on the balcony of his penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan.

The television behind him showed live coverage of the fire.

A news anchor spoke rapidly.

"Authorities have not yet determined whether the explosion was accidental or intentional..."

Daniel smiled.

He raised a glass of whiskey.

"Goodbye, evidence."

His phone buzzed.

The smile disappeared.

He answered immediately.

"What?"

A panicked voice replied.

"They recovered the legal vault."

Daniel's hand tightened around the glass.

"Impossible."

"It was supposed to be destroyed."

"They're taking it to the federal forensic lab now."

The line went dead.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time in years...

He looked genuinely afraid.

Back at the scene, federal investigators opened the damaged vault.

Most of the paper files had burned.

But inside was something unexpected.

A small encrypted hard drive.

Protected by heat-resistant casing.

The forensic technician smiled.

"If this still works..."

"...someone's night is about to get very uncomfortable."

By sunrise, the drive had been partially restored.

Everyone gathered inside the federal cybercrime unit.

Large monitors displayed thousands of recovered files.

Deleted emails.

Private messages.

Encrypted financial ledgers.

Then...

One video file appeared.

Its timestamp was only two weeks old.

The technician clicked PLAY.

Daniel Harrington appeared on the screen inside his private office.

Across from him sat Richard Lawson.

Richard looked nervous.

Daniel did not.

"You've served your purpose."

Richard frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Victoria will take the blame."

"And Blake?"

"He'll spend so much time chasing family secrets..."

"...he'll never notice what I've built."

Richard looked uneasy.

"What if Emma uncovers everything?"

Daniel laughed.

"She won't live long enough to finish."

The room fell silent.

Emma's blood ran cold.

Blake's fists clenched.

Jonathan slowly stood.

William stared at the screen in disbelief.

The recording continued.

Daniel leaned forward.

"If necessary..."

"...another accident can always be arranged."

The video ended.

No one spoke.

The lead prosecutor finally broke the silence.

"That recording changes everything."

"It proves motive."

"It proves conspiracy."

"And it may prove attempted murder."

Blake turned toward Emma.

"I'm so sorry."

She looked into his eyes.

"I know."

"No..."

"You don't."

"I spent five years believing I had failed you."

"But I failed in ways I never imagined."

Emma stepped closer.

"You can't change what happened."

"No."

"But you can decide what happens next."

Before Blake could answer, an FBI agent hurried into the room.

"We have Daniel's location."

Everyone looked up.

The agent placed a GPS map on the table.

"His private jet has just requested clearance for departure."

"Destination?"

The agent's expression grew grim.

"No destination filed."

Jonathan immediately understood.

"He's running."

The lead prosecutor shook his head.

"Not anymore."

He picked up his phone.

"Ground every runway."

"Alert Customs."

"Nobody leaves the country."

Hundreds of miles away, Daniel Harrington climbed the stairs to his private jet, convinced he was only minutes away from disappearing forever.

He smiled as the cabin door began to close.

Then he heard the unmistakable sound of approaching helicopters.

One.

Then two.

Then three.

Red and blue lights swept across the runway.

A loudspeaker echoed through the morning air.

"Daniel Harrington!"

"Step away from the aircraft!"

"You are surrounded!"

Daniel slowly looked out the window.

For the first time in his carefully planned life...

May you like

There was nowhere left to run.
