CHAPTER 9 — The Midnight Confession

The giant clock above Union Station read 11:57 P.M.
Chicago's famous terminal was nearly empty.
Only a handful of late-night travelers crossed the marble floor beneath the vaulted ceiling.
Emma stood near Platform 12, her hands tucked into the pockets of her coat.
She had come alone.
Or at least...
That was what the note demanded.
What its sender didn't know was that Blake, Jonathan, William, and two federal agents were quietly watching from different locations throughout the station.
No one intended to let Emma face another trap by herself.
Three minutes later...
A slow echo of footsteps broke the silence.
An elderly man emerged from the shadows.
Charles Beaumont.
He looked older than the photographs.
Smaller.
More fragile.
Yet his eyes remained unnervingly calm.
He stopped several feet away.
"You look just like your mother."
Emma's expression never changed.
"You've ruined enough lives."
"I'm here for answers."
Charles gave a faint nod.
"You deserve them."
Neither of them sat.
Neither offered a handshake.
For several long seconds, they simply stared at one another.
Finally Emma asked the question that had haunted her for weeks.
"Why?"
Charles sighed.
"Because I was paid."
"By Victoria?"
"No."
"Richard Lawson?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Charles looked toward the towering station clock.
"A promise made thirty years ago."
Emma frowned.
"I don't understand."
"You will."
He reached inside his coat.
Emma instinctively stepped backward.
Instead of a weapon...
He produced a thick sealed envelope.
Across the front were handwritten words.
The Beaumont Files.
"I kept copies."
Emma's eyes narrowed.
"Insurance?"
Charles smiled sadly.
"I called it survival."
Hidden across the station, Blake watched through a discreet earpiece connected to the federal agents.
He wanted to run toward Emma.
Instead, he forced himself to stay still.
This conversation had to happen.
Charles slowly handed Emma the envelope.
"I forged hospital records."
"I forged text messages."
"I altered legal documents."
"I destroyed marriages."
"I separated children from parents."
Emma's voice remained steady.
"And now?"
"I'm tired."
"You expect sympathy?"
"No."
"I expect prison."
Emma carefully opened the envelope.
Inside were hundreds of pages.
Financial ledgers.
Private contracts.
Birth records.
Court filings.
Photographs.
One page immediately caught her attention.
A signed payment authorization dated twenty-nine years earlier.
Amount:
Five million dollars.
Authorized by:
Margaret Harrington Family Trust.
Emma's heart pounded.
"So Blake's grandmother..."
Charles interrupted quietly.
"...was my client."
At that exact moment, Blake stepped out from behind a marble column.
"I've heard enough."
Charles wasn't surprised.
"I assumed you were here."
Emma turned.
"You followed me."
Blake gave a guilty smile.
"I promised myself I'd never let you face danger alone again."
Emma wanted to be angry.
Instead...
She felt unexpectedly relieved.
Federal agents slowly surrounded the platform.
The lead prosecutor approached Charles.
"Mr. Beaumont..."
"You are under arrest."
Charles calmly extended both hands.
"No need for handcuffs."
"I'm finished running."
One agent stepped forward.
Before placing the cuffs on him, he asked,
"Why keep all this evidence?"
Charles looked toward Emma.
"Because her mother saved my life once."
Everyone froze.
William stared in disbelief.
"What?"
Charles nodded.
"Thirty years ago, I suffered a heart attack in my office."
"Every executive walked away."
"They were afraid of scandal."
"The only person who stayed..."
"...was Emma's mother."
"She called the ambulance."
"She kept me alive."
His voice trembled.
"I repaid kindness with betrayal."
"I've regretted it every day since."
As agents escorted Charles away, he suddenly stopped.
"There is one more truth."
Everyone turned.
He looked directly at Blake.
"You've been searching for the person who truly benefited from your divorce."
Blake nodded.
Charles spoke quietly.
"It wasn't Victoria."
"It wasn't Richard."
"It wasn't me."
Blake frowned.
"Then who?"
Charles's answer echoed through the empty station.
"Daniel Harrington."
Blake's face went completely pale.
"My cousin?"
Charles nodded.
"He didn't just help steal your company."
"He intended to inherit all of it."
Emma felt a chill run down her spine.
Charles continued.
"Richard believed he was working for Victoria."
"Victoria believed she was protecting her family."
"But Daniel..."
"...was manipulating all of them."
William whispered,
"My God..."
Charles gave one final exhausted smile.
"Never underestimate the quietest man in the room."
The federal agents led Charles away.
Blake immediately opened the Beaumont Files.
His hands stopped on one particular document.
It was a recent stock transfer.
Dated only six weeks earlier.
Daniel Harrington had quietly purchased controlling interests in several companies that supplied Harrington Energy.
If Harrington Energy collapsed...
Daniel would become richer than ever.
Blake looked toward Emma.
"This isn't over."
Emma slowly closed the folder.
"No."
"It never was."
At that exact moment, Blake's phone rang.
His chief of security sounded panicked.
"Mr. Harrington..."
"There's been an explosion."
Blake's heart stopped.
"Where?"
"Harrington Energy Research Center."
"And..."
"...your cousin Daniel was seen leaving the building ten minutes before it happened."
The line went silent.
Blake and Emma exchanged one horrified glance.
For five years they had believed they were uncovering the end of a conspiracy.
May you like
Instead...
They had just uncovered the beginning of a far more dangerous one.
