CHAPTER 8 — The Mastermind Behind Every Lie

The conference room inside the federal courthouse was silent.

Blake, Emma, Jonathan, and William sat across from two federal prosecutors.

On the large screen, Victoria Harrington appeared through a secure video link from the detention facility.

She looked nothing like the elegant woman who had once ruled Chicago's most influential family.

Her perfectly styled silver hair was gone.

Her expensive jewelry had disappeared.

For the first time in decades...

Victoria Harrington looked frightened.

The lead prosecutor leaned forward.

"Mrs. Harrington, you stated yesterday that you were acting under someone else's instructions."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"Yes."

"Who?"

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered a name.

"Charles Beaumont."

The room fell silent.

Blake frowned.

"I've never heard that name."

Jonathan hadn't.

William had.

The color drained from William Sterling's face.

"Oh, no..."

Emma immediately noticed.

"You know him?"

William slowly nodded.

"I hoped he was dead."

Thirty years earlier, Charles Beaumont had been one of the country's most powerful corporate attorneys.

He never appeared in newspapers.

He rarely attended public events.

But behind closed doors, he specialized in protecting wealthy families by making inconvenient people disappear from their lives.

Not through violence.

Through paperwork.

Forged birth certificates.

Altered wills.

Hidden inheritances.

Destroyed medical records.

He left almost no trace.

William spoke quietly.

"When your mother became pregnant..."

"...Charles represented my political campaign."

"I trusted him."

"He told me he would protect us."

Jonathan added,

"And years later..."

"...he became legal adviser to the Harrington family."

Emma slowly looked toward Blake.

"The same man..."

"...destroyed both our families."

Blake clenched his fists.

For the first time, every broken piece of the puzzle finally fit together.

The prosecutor placed another document on the table.

"There's more."

He turned it toward Blake.

Charles Beaumont had remained on Harrington Energy's legal payroll until six months earlier.

Blake stared in disbelief.

"He was still working for us?"

"Indirectly."

"He billed through shell companies."

Jonathan quietly added,

"Professional manipulators rarely disappear."

"They simply change names."

At that exact moment, one of the prosecutors received an urgent phone call.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

"When?"

He ended the call and stood.

"We have a problem."

Everyone looked up.

"Charles Beaumont's house is empty."

"He disappeared last night."

Blake stood immediately.

"He knows."

The prosecutor nodded.

"Someone warned him."

Across the city...

A black luxury sedan sped toward a private airfield outside Chicago.

Inside sat an elderly man wearing dark glasses.

Charles Beaumont.

His hands remained steady despite the chaos surrounding him.

Across from him sat a younger woman reviewing documents.

"They've arrested Victoria."

Charles smiled faintly.

"I expected that."

"They found the recordings."

"I expected that too."

The woman hesitated.

"What about Blake Harrington?"

Charles looked out the window.

"I never underestimated Blake."

"I underestimated Emma."

For the first time in decades...

Charles admitted a mistake.

Back at the courthouse, Emma couldn't shake a strange feeling.

Something bothered her.

She opened the old leather folder William had brought.

Again.

She slowly flipped through every page.

Hospital records.

Letters.

Photographs.

Then...

One photograph caught her attention.

A charity gala from thirty years earlier.

Standing beside William...

Was Charles Beaumont.

Behind them...

Barely visible...

A young Victoria Harrington.

Emma froze.

"Jonathan..."

He looked over.

"What is it?"

She pointed toward the photograph.

"They already knew each other."

Jonathan leaned closer.

"So this wasn't two separate conspiracies."

Emma nodded.

"It was one."

"One plan..."

"...lasting three decades."

That evening, Blake returned alone to the Harrington mansion.

Most of the furniture had already been removed as part of the investigation.

The enormous house echoed with emptiness.

He walked into his late father's study.

For years he had avoided opening one particular desk drawer.

Tonight...

He finally did.

Inside lay an old leather journal.

His father's handwriting covered every page.

The final entry stopped Blake's heart.

If anything happens to me, never trust Beaumont.

He knows secrets capable of destroying every family he has ever represented.

I fear Victoria listens to him more than she listens to me.

If Blake ever reads this...

Tell him to choose love before pride.

Blake slowly sat down.

His father had known.

Not everything.

But enough to be afraid.

Tears filled Blake's eyes.

"I failed all of you."

His voice echoed through the empty mansion.

The next morning, Emma was preparing breakfast when one of the triplets ran into the kitchen.

"Mom!"

"There's a package!"

She frowned.

"I didn't order anything."

A plain brown box sat outside the front door.

No return address.

Jonathan carefully examined it before opening it.

Inside...

There was no bomb.

No money.

No documents.

Only one object.

An old silver pocket watch.

William immediately recognized it.

His face went pale.

"That's impossible."

Emma looked at him.

"What is it?"

William picked up the watch with trembling hands.

"I gave this to Charles Beaumont..."

"...the day before you were born."

Hidden beneath the watch was a handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

If you want the whole truth, come alone. Midnight. Union Station.

No signature.

No explanation.

Blake read the note twice.

Then looked toward Emma.

"I'm not letting you go alone."

Emma folded the note and slipped it into her pocket.

"You may not have a choice."

Because deep inside...

She already knew.

After thirty years of lies...

Someone was finally ready to tell the complete truth.

Whether it was a trap...

Or a confession...

None of them knew.

May you like

But at midnight...

Everything would change.
